Smashwords Interview

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Wales, UK, and always loved reading books. Some of my favourite reads as a child were Asterix, Tintin, Star Trek and Star Wars novels and Roald Dahl. When anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would always say that I wanted to be an author. as I grew up and learned about publishing, I put this dream away, feeling that it would never be possible for me. but now, thanks to e-readers, Amazon, Smashwords and in particular the wonderful books written by Mark Coker, I am able to fulfil my dream at last!
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in school, sometimes for school work and sometimes for myself. Poems, short stories and articles. My proudest moment was when my English teacher gave me an A+++ grade for a story I'd worked on all summer long!

  • The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success on Oct. 08, 2014

This book was most helpful to me in writing, publishing and marketing my book, 1-Minute Chinese. And more than that, it's a really good read! Thanks, Mark!
  • How to Finish Your Dissertation in Six Months, Even if You Don't Know What to Write on Aug. 02, 2016

This is an excellent book, not just for people writing dissertations - although speaking as one, I can wholeheartedly recommend it - but also for any kind of writer. I loved the ideas about keeping a chain of writing going, and the "write drunk, edit sober" idea!
  • Deliberately Dumb: Understanding America's Education Failure on April 01, 2017

A well-written and enjoyable book on an important topic. The kind of "letter to the editor" (as it describes itself) that we need more of!
  • Conversational Languages: The Most Innovative Technique to Master Any Foreign Language on April 04, 2017

What a delightful book! As a student of Chinese, I'm always looking for things that can make learning languages easier. I really love the author's approach to languages, and found the Mandarin section most interesting. I shall definitely be using this book whenever I need to get ready to visit another country! Rowan Kohll, author of the 1-Minute Chinese books.

  • "Twitterdee Dum" on April 17, 2017

An excellent book! This selection of articles makes a very worthwhile read.
  • The Secrets to Ebook Publishing Success on March 08, 2019

This book is genuinely inspiring. After reading it, I am excited afresh about being a writer, and have lots of great ideas to put into practice. The themes in the book I think are most important are: How ebooks are ever-fresh, whereas paper books have a "ticking clock" which starts as soon as they get into the bookshops. How you can keep tinkering with your book until you hit the right thing that makes it go viral. How marketing is important (and this book has plenty of great ideas!) but the best way to go viral is to write a great book. Thanks for everything, Mark!
  • Bad Bananas: A Story Cookbook for Kids on July 15, 2019

A delightful book! I bought this for my son, who is seven years old, and we both enjoyed it very much. The illustrations are excellent, the jokes are funny, and I think it's a great idea to include recipes in a story book - or to build a story around a recipe book! Said my son: "It's a really good book and the jokes are funny and it's got interesting facts and I like the bit where one banana saves another banana and the joke about Darth Vader." Highly recommended!
  • Two Sides on July 28, 2019

I started liking this book the moment I saw the table of contents! The poems in it are well-written, sometimes fun and sometimes funny. I especially liked the coffee poem!
  • The Honey Man in the Disco Street on Aug. 24, 2019

Very original! A delightful short story with lots of layers of meaning. A pleasure to read!
