Short description

Even the most devoted cynics have a soft spot, though most keep it well hidden...even from themselves, as did Midas Crackenberry. But from time to time, something intrudes on that cynicism, slips under its radar, and makes direct contact with the humanity that has been hidden from view so long and so well long. And the miracle that ensues is a wonder to behold.

Extended description

Midas Crackenberry was what most people would call a mean old man. His heart, if he had one, was as hard as the glass from which he swigged generous portions of whiskey. But on this stifling summer day, he was on a collision course with something new. Something that terrified him more than the Grim Reaper, that would send him into fits of rage. Something for which he could not have been less prepared. And it changed his life, his very being, in fact, forever. And he loved it.

A very good short story that raises the point of never taking people at face value based upon how they act or what they say; that there is always more going on beneath the surface than what first appears, for sure.

At first I thought Midas Crackenberry was a lonely, bitter old man who had seen better days. Then the cat came along. The cat sensed redeeming qualities in Midas. Soon those qualities started shining through.

My attention was drawn when I read the title, since I am a cat lover and happen to own 3, all rescued. I hated Crackenberry, but thank goodness kitties have the ability to bring out the best in people, even out of old grouches...
