Short description
Inspired by the parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man. Brad and Anita face the challenge of helping a young woman who is shunned by society, scarred by tragedy, and whose life is spiraling out of control from drug abuse. Will they reach out to save her at the risk of their own relationships, or will they suffer the torment of regret when she is gone?
A woman dies in her home. Her disabled son, unable to help himself, expires a week later. Most neighbors blame Jane, the woman’s drug addict daughter, for not checking on her family. But not Anita Brooks. She’s haunted by thoughts of the dog in the woman’s backyard whose barking had kept them all awake every night for the past week. Why had they not checked?
After a chance encounter with Jane, Brad Thompson, a young businessman with a promising career, is drawn to help her, despite her self-destructive behavior and the disapproval of his family and friends.
Will Brad and Anita risk their reputations and relationships to help this disturbed young woman, shunned by society and haunted by the tragic deaths of her mother and disabled brother? Or will they fall prey to the sin of indifference, and like the rich man in the Gospel parable suffer the torment of regret for their failure to reach out while they had the chance?

A mother and her disabled son are dead, one to a stroke and the other to the indifference of neighbors. Who is to blame? And what could have averted this tragedy? In “Sin of the Rich Man,” Dave Barton asks us to consider what we would sacrifice for the sake of a stranger in need. This quietly compelling story will make you think and likely leave you unsettled.
