Extended description

THE WIFE OF FREEDOM is a romantic adventure which takes place in a fictional world called New Acton - a world something like America in 1776.

Mary Alwyn is the upstanding wife of a local revolutionary. She was once a wild orphan, who loved to run barefoot and jump in the mud, but she's been raised to be a good and proper wife. When she married the irrepressible Jackie Alwyn, everyone thought it was a perfect match. Unfortunately the man known to all as "Jackie the Freedom" is married to the revolution, and Mary is often alone. So when she meets a charming nobleman, he's like a big mud-puddle, and she just can't help but jump in bed with him.

But Jackie - ever the anarchist - doesn't take the infidelity the way you might expect. When she betrays her lover's trust for the revolution, he holds her up as a hero, publicly, and calls her "The Whore of Freedom." I enjoyed reading this book very much. It's a great story, well told, with a satisfying ending.

The main character, Mary, is strong, resilient and independent, far from perfect and I felt a lot of sympathy towards her. Jackie is likable and roguish.

I don't like either this title or the original title. If this book had been called "The Wife of Freedom" when I first looked at it, I probably would have thought 'romance' and wouldn't have bought it. Actually, I hesitated over reading it with the original title, too. The blurb above pulled me in.

There were lots of surprises for me as the story unfolded and that's what kept me up past midnight reading. Looking forward to the sequel. All in all, this book was a bargain and a delightful way to spend a few hours. One critique though.....I liked the original title better.
