Northwest England in the year 2007 and the future looks bleak.
Jack and Caroline Smith are an ordinary couple, with a new house and a young son, and like many ordinary couples are struggling with debt, redundancy and the imminent loss of their home.
Is it time for a modern fairy tale?
Jack comes home one day with lots of money and a pair of old pants. He claims that he bought the old trousers because he noticed a £10 note in the pocket and that now every time he puts his hand in this pocket he pulls out £10.
Caroline doesn’t believe him. Who would believe such a story, a fairy tale? But the money is real enough and soon they start to spend it.
Cars, holidays, houses, clothes, and horses --- Caroline buys lots of horses --- and a farm to keep them on.
But what can happen in 2007 when you have lots of cash, that you can’t account for?
Soon friends, work colleagues, tax authorities, social workers, police and criminals, all with their own agendas and desires, become interested in Mr and Mrs Smith. Soon everyone is asking where the money really comes from and how to get their share of it.
So in the end, do the Smith family live happy ever after? Let's find out.
