Short description

Howie gets a job at a hokey arts ‘n crafts store to meet girls. Instead, he meets Arthur. Sure, Arthur is smart and charming and has distractingly magnificent eyelashes, but there’s no getting away from one troublesome fact: he’s a dude. And Howie, who’s spent the past twenty-two years being strictly unexceptional, isn’t about to shake up his whole (mediocre) existence now. ... Right?

Extended description

Howie gets a job at Artie Kraft's Arts 'N Crafts hoping to score with his lady coworkers. After all, girls love a sensitive guy, and what's more sensitive than dedicating your life to selling yarn and ... stuff? (Okay, so maybe it'd be a good idea to actually learn what one sells at an arts 'n crafts store.) But things don't go exactly according to plan. Coworker #1 is Kristy: blonde, bubbly, unattainable perfection. Coworker #2 is Cora: tiny, much-pierced, and way too fierce to screw with in any sense. And Coworker #3 is, well, Arthur. It goes without saying that he’s not an option. Right?

… Right?

Yeah, Howie’s life just got straight up confusing.

Pun intended.

This book came warmly recommended and I decided to give it a try, since I was looking for a light summer read. Turns out, Know Not Why will stay with me longer than your typical summer novel, and that's because it's not as light as it may seem. Just like its hero, Howie, it's got more depth and heart than it lets on at first.

The love story may be cliched at times, but it's never boring, and the author manages to add a little twist here and there that makes it real and genuine. But what took me by surprise was... all the rest. As the story unravels, we get to know an eclectic range of secondary characters that feel all but secondary. More than the love story itself, I fell for the friendships in this book. Each friendship has its own characteristics, its own life, and they all warmed my little heart.

Even better than the various relationships the characters share? Hannah Johnson's writing: her style is both casually smart and really, really funny. It's one of the most entertaining books I've read in a long time, and I laughed out loud all through the novel. Howie is plain hilarious!

I'm impressed by the quality of this little novel, and I can only recommend it. I give it 3 and a half stars, but since Smashwords won't allow this rating, I'm giving Know Not Why a full 4-stars rating to help share the love.
