Ebook Description
My name is Mike Ross. I'm a Ferryman. I help people with ghost problems, or ghosts with people problems. Funny thing, no one ever helps me with my problems. Civil War ghosts bent on killing me, Skinwalkers who just want my body, and a vindictive spirit linked both to my bloodline and my destiny. The dead still hold a good deal of influence over the world, and they don't want to give it up.

Bush’s war, ghosts, Edgar Allen Poe, Civil War fighters. Amazingly, these all combine for a fascinating tale with a character we’ll remember, flaws and all. Bernheimer skillfully introduces Mike Ross, the not so balanced hero, and has created a ghost story that almost makes you want to believe in real ghosts. This is great storytelling that goes beyond just the “action” to give the reader a fulfilling story, “real people”, and a hint of the next adventure to come. A wonderful read, this book easily holds it's own with the current crop of "urban fantasy" books, and beats out some. The premise is interesting, the characters are fun and easy to relate to. I look for to more of Mr. Bernheimer's work and I hope there is a sequel.

I really enjoyed this book! Looking forward to the next installment. The story deserves 5 stars and I almost went with 5, but I felt that there was a little bit of awkwardness in the narrative at times. Easy for me to say...
I agree with Mats, this is well worth reading!

I have been a fan of Jim Bernheimer since I first found his fan-fiction online. Ever since then, and after finding some of his other short and original works I've boon hooked. It's like an addiction. I can't get enough. I am desperately awaiting the sequel to this amazing novel and can't wait to read the first one again.

Everything everyone here has said is completely true, this is one of the best sci-fi books I have ever read. Completely worth it. Bernheimer has a big future ahead of him, considering the raw amount of talent he has. I read this in one sitting, and it was amazing. Just get it, you have no idea what your missing.
Now, we just need a sequel....

I have been a fan of Jim's fanfiction for a while now and only recently discovered Smashwords. When I downloaded this book yesterday night and read, no devoured it, I was not disappointed! this book was extremely compelling and once I began reading I couldn't stop. One of my top books and I will enjoy the sequel just as much.

This is the best book I've read in a while. The writing style and plot is gripping to the point where one loses track of time. I can't wait to read more works by this author.

I'm a fan of the genre, but rarely see stories as well-told. Love the characters, love the world, love the adventures. Despite the supernatural elements of the story, there's little suspension of disbelief, as Mike Ross himself is so believable.
I've paid a lot more money in the past for books by "mainstream" publishers, that were not nearly up to this level of quality.
I'm always delighted to find a new author, especially one good enough that I'll actively seek out whatever they write.

I finally found time to read this book - Congratulations Jim, it's excellent. I'm impressed with the originality of the ghost world and I enjoyed the plot.
The main character is convincing, human, amusing, admirable in his determination and get-right-back-up attitude, interesting, not too predictable and of course likeable. I wanted to see more of Mum - probably because I'm one.
The writing style is totally readable so the story flows well and I thought the tale well-constructed with a good build-up.
I really like LE Modesitt Jr's ghost stories and while I don't consider Jim's writing quite up there yet, the feel is more like that than (for instance) those overly sensational vampire stories around.
I'd have been happy with the value for money if I'd paid average commercial rates for this book, so I sincerely hope Jim makes it into mainstream publication.

I must say how pleased I am with this book. The author has created a very
rich and wonderful world which I hope continues in future works. In fact, I am already hoping for a sequel. The story moves quickly, the action is well-paced and the internal dialogue is well crafted and fun to read.
This story style is unique. The closest thing I could compare it to is Jim Butcher's Dresden books. If you like those I am sure you will like this one as well.

When I say 5 Starts, I mean this story has all the ingredients to a masterpiece in the making. There are a lot of bad stories out on the market, but this one isn't one of them. Jim's books is his own creation, funny, witty and realistic to its core. The plot will have you laughing if you take the time to read it and there is a joke hidden in between every other line that you miss the first time you read but when you see it again you can't help but chuckle.
The time and detail is very clear in the story. Even with my extensive knowledge on Sci-fi and Fantasy fiction, this has to be one of the very best. The main character has a lot of funny problems to deal with and the way he stands up to them in strides is something to look forward too.
There isn't really any flaws in this story, it is more just a preference if you will. It is very clean, but not so clean that it looses its sparkle, it is a book for the mature and slightly more mature teens and I am savoring every little bit of it until it ends.
It is simply the marketing that is keeping this book from being the next blockbuster or Opera clubs shelf, when it hits mainstream this book will shake the ghost world to its core.
If you like humor and action this is the book for you. The magic behind the funny scenes is that it is hidden and it just pops out at you when you don't expect it. If you are a fan of his fanfiction you'll know exactly what I mean.
His style of humor is all his own and I have thus not run into someone who can emulate what he writes. If you are a aid fan of Dresden files, then look no further because this book is better!
It has all the elements of a growing hero without the annoying angst, well Ross's life is pretty harsh but his 'short man' syndrome really makes you put your own life in perspective. It takes 2 chapters to get into the story but afterwards you can't put it down!
I must have read this book over night, you know that feeling you get when you have to know the ending, well lets just say I didn't get that much sleep, or even leave the same spot, hell didn't even get dinner, thats how good it is.
Don't believe me? Buy it! You won't be let down!
I have high expectations for a sequel and look forward to it when the time comes.
