About Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting back story, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

It was dragged out, it took forever for the main characters to meet, and I didn't think the sex with Kellen was necessary, actually it was a total turn off for me and made me stop reading the book. Thus, I deleted it from my reading device before Bryan and Cassandra even had the chance to met...

T_T

Such a disappointment. I actually liked both the previous books.

THANK YOU Nicky Charles for begin such an excellent writer, I'm am still blown away by these books, I LOVED them*************** I found all the books brought me into all the lives of the characters, who they are, and their lives. Also the connections in to each book and characters was brilliant and I loved the catch ups so we see how things have moved for them through out the different times and stories and also how they are all connected in one or more stories. all I can say is loved them all

Cannot put these books down!!! Downloaded everywhere.... On my phone, on my tablet, on my desktop...I cannot stop reading! Nicky has such a talent for catapulting you into her world which apparently is very real for her, and making you read on and on to get what happens next. I will be rereading each one as the world she transplants you in can be complex to understand and deserves a second, even third reading. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended!!!

I have to be honest. This was my least favourite of the Law of the Lycan series so far. It wasn't that I didn't like the characters, because I did. Cassie and Bryan are both great. I think the problem for me was that all of the past characters played roles too. Elsie and Kane and Mel and Ryne were all accounted for, as were Daniel and his love interest and Damien and his probable future love interest. It felt a bit like Cassie and Bryan had to share their story, and they deserved their own. Plus, with so many characters from past books present there were a lot of small recap passages that I found somewhat annoying. Charles' writing is still easy to read and enjoyable. I'm still liking the series a lot. This particular book just happens to fall at the bottom of my preference list.

this was an awesome trilogy, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write about Sam and Damien...I swear, you put cliffhanger character couples in every book that BEG to be written about....I would LOVE to see how Sam and Damien got along and what the heck happens about the whole Chicago Oregon dispute Alpha bossy crap that Kane is being a harumph about gets clleared up, seriously, Kane is one of the weird nearly unlikable yet redeemable byrare moments of actual thought and compassionate regard for others characters...most of the time I don't like him, then when he does something I REALLY don't like and I get ready to hate his guts, he does someting and I go "oh, he's not so bad" again....I love your writing

Nicky Charles did it again......another great book. Book #3 in the Lycan Law series was well written.

***SPOILER ALERT***
It is about Cassie who was in part of Book #2. Cassie ran away from home after seeing her uncle killed, a werewolf attack & kill his trusted lawyer, & finding out that werewolves kill any who know there secret. She was terrified & needed to start over. She ended up in a hotel in some small town from a long bus ride, went to bed & woke up in Las Vegas in an alley with only her clothes (thank goodness) & her purse.

Kellen (a nice guy with a gambling problem) finds Cassie in the alley & offers her help. 3 years later they are living together & work in a grocery store. Meanwhile, people have been looking for her. The good people & the bad people.

Bryan (Beta in Ryne's pack) has been trying to locate Cassie for 3 years. Suddenly a break in the case has found her in Vegas. Bryan is determined to find her & bring her in as part of the pack. Cassie has been drugging her wolf, trying to control & contain the beast. Afraid that if it is free she will be lost forever & go on some crazy killing spree.

Kellen is gambling again & in serious debt. The bad people have located Cassie as well as Bryan. Bryan has to protect Cassie from her BFF (Kellen), the bad guys who are trying to kidnap her, & herself. Bryan is jealous of Kellen & wants him no where near Cassie. Cassie loves Kellen & just wants to help him & protect him from everyone including Bryan.

Will Cassie expect her inner wolf as part of herself? Will she allow her feelings from Bryan be known? Will Cassie be able to let Kellen go knowing how much it will hurt him even after all he did for her? It was a great ending & I am hoping that Nicky will continue this series & give us more of Sam & Damien in the next book.

I really enjoyed the build up of each character in the series and the plot was strong. My only issue was that the story could have been edited a little better to catch double words and misplaced quotations. That is a minor issue for a self-published book and although those things caught my attention, the story was well written and enjoyable.

Review by: Sheri on Dec. 11, 2011 :
The Finding is the third book in the Law of the Lycans series by Nicky Charles. This book was definitely my favorite in the series.

This book picks up three years after The Keeping. You would think we would have missed a lot in that timeframe, but the author does a great job of going back and filling in details without it being tedious. This story is about Cassie who has run away from the only home she has ever known and is now basically in hiding, in fear for her life, from the werewolves. She has been helped by Kellan and is now living with him, trying to live a normal life while also struggling to keep her werewolf under control. Cassie is terrified of letting the wolf out, because she has seen first hand how dangerous wolves can be. Bryan, who has never given up his search for her, finds out where she has been living and goes to claim her under the law of The Finding, determined to make her part of the pack.

There was so much I loved about this book. First, I really liked that we got all the different points of view. I can see the progression of the author's writing from the first book in this series to this one. The author did a great job switching back and forth between multiple people without ever getting confusing or muddled. These books are a new take on werewolves from anything I've previously read. The pack dynamics are complex and very interesting.

I loved the complex relationship between Cassie and Bryan; her not wanting to love him, or even like him, but she cannot help herself, as her inner wolf is and has been in love with him for some time. I really liked the sweetness of their relationship; instant attraction but not automatically jumping into bed.

I really liked Cassie. Though she appeared weak and helpless on the outside, when it came down to it she stood up for herself and was able to take care of herself. She really was a strong lead character, struggling for so long to stay in control of herself, her wolf, and her surroundings without having anyone to really help her or know her inner struggles. ~ "She sighed in frustration. God, she hated standing around like some pathetic character in a romance novel." ~ I enjoyed watching Cassie struggle to control her wolf and ultimately live with it and even embrace it.

This book even had the surprise element of being a little tear jerky. Cassie's relationship with Kellan brought a new twist to the love triangle. She was not in love with him, and she knew it, but she did love him and felt a sense of duty to him because he had helped her for so long, and he was the only friend or family that she had. It was heart wrenching to watch her struggle to decide what was best for her and ultimately play out her decision.

One more thing I liked is that we got to see the previous characters again, too. It was fun seeing how their lives were now, a few years down the road from when we initially were introduced to them. I thought all of the characters were very well developed and written. They had such depth and background to them that we really got a sense of their personalities.

This book wrapped loose ends up quite nicely, but still left some open ends for a possible future book. I really hope there will be another book in this series. I would love to read more about Sam and Damien.

The only question I have is why is Nicky Charles giving away these books for free? I would have considered it money well spent to have paid for this series.

I just finished the series and I couldn't put it down! I've read all the Harry Potter Series and Twilight series, but this kept me so intertwined with the characters! The effort made by the author to actually relate to the characters made this series unbelievably difficult to put down. I would, however, like to know what happens after the blood bonding of Bryan and Cassie. As with the Chicago pack and Sam. I really hope to read more!

Watch your back Stephenie Meyer! On the heels of your Twilight characters, Bella, Edward and Jacob, is Nicky Charles's werewolf series, THE MATING, THE FINDING and THE KEEPING.

Nicky Charles writing style makes this series come alive through his colorful characters in a way only few have accomplished in modern literature.

If you are looking for a series that is written with the grammatical care of JK Rowling, and excitement that may exceed that of Stephenie Meyer, be sure to check out this series, beginning with The Mating.

The Finding by Nicky Charles Law of the Lycons Book 3
A great paranormal series. And this third book is packed full. We see more of what is going on in the minds of characters from previous books along with the main characters, Cassandra Greyson and Bryan Cooper. Nicky has a unique way of having the person and the wolf as two separate entities and yet one.

Cassie ran off three years ago after hearing her Uncle Anthony Greyson say she was a werewolf and than seeing a man change into a wolf and attack Mr. Aldrich and a gun went off and her uncle was laying there dead as well. The words ringing in her head, if anyone knew about the wolves they would die. She took her secrets and left. Somehow she went from being in Kansas to Las Vegas, where Kellen Anderson found her. He took her under his wing and gave her a place to stay. He did not know that the drugs she took a few days a month were to hold her wolf inside. Cassie was sure it would go on a murdering spree if it ever escaped, just like the big black wolf. Kellen's gambling issues continue after he has promised to stop. Cassie wants to stop bailing him out but he gets the drugs she needs, she finds herself in a catch twenty-two.

Bryan Cooper was so drawn into finding Cassandra. He had found her scent in the motel three years ago and his wolf was drawn to her. Finally someone has spotted someone that may be the girl and Bryan was off to get her. By the Lycon Laws she would belong to their pack. Only it was not so easy to convince her to come to Canada. For a man who usually had no trouble getting women, Bryan met a woman who could not get away from him fast enough. And instead of heading to Canada he found himself heading to Chicago to help her rescue her boyfriend, Kellen. It seems the family lawyer was using him as blackmail to get the young heiress home.

Leon Aldrich is the family lawyer. Ryne had attacked him but he lived. He wanted to have all the Greyson fortune for himself and was desperate to get Cassie so he could further those plans.

Marla denies her wolf. It is heartbreaking to see her “lock” her wolf within and not let it out. She only cares about money. Her goal has been to get Leon to marry her so she can get the Greyson fortune. Marla has no clue that Aldrich will bring her most feared enemies right to her doorstep, Ryne and Kane.

**Language and sexual situations.

ARGH! I hate that I'm done and there isn't another one to read yet! I do hope you feel better soon and come back to these tremendous characters! I want to know what happens with Daniel and Tessa! Will Tessa overcome her fears from the nearly forced bonding with a much older wolf? Will Daniel be there waiting for her when she is ready for a mate to care for her? How will Ryne handle fatherhood? And what else can we learn about the history of Melody and Kane? I found those side bits intriguing. I have to admit I found the multiple points of view a bit repetitive at times, but you pulled it off nicely by the time all was said and done. I can't complain much since I read through the night to finish the book, unable to stop. I tried once, but I couldn't sleep until I got back up and finished the story! Please take care and provide us with a new offering soon! I and many others will be watching and waiting. Also, I plan to send a nice donation to my local animal shelter at your suggestion. These books are worth way more than we have to pay for them!!

I enjoyed all three of the books in this series. The first and last being my favorite. This book had a lot going on a once and some times it was just to coincidental and obvious how so many people were connected in the triangle of drama. Only negative thing I have to say is that sometimes Nicky Charles can get long winded unnecessarily. What could be said in a quarter of the page she stretches it out to an entire page. One last thing, her use of 'er' where most people would say 'uh' was DRIVING ME CRAZY.

This is the third book in a solidly entertaining trilogy. (If there is a 4th book, I will definitely read it, even if it isn't free.) Not destined to be a classic, but sometimes you need to read something exactly like this. Sexual tension, fantasy (werewolves), and a bit of drama and danger. What a great mix. The Finding was great - it kept the story going and brought closure to each couple. Again, I hope you do continue the series as soon as your arm/shoulder gets better and good luck with that. Thanks for sharing your talent with these books. They are great!!

OMG where to start?!?!
First off I hope your pain and discomfort either goes away or you find a way of being able to cope with this Ms. Charles.

Ok so I hated when this book came to an end. I was so engrossed in this series its ridiculous. That means it was great tho so don't you worry. I would have gladly paid money for all of these and have told a few people about this series and they too are seemingly interested. I hope that one day there will be a continuation of this series. I would love to see what happens next with Sam and Damien or Daniel and Tessa. Those new couple possibilities would make for an interesting book or two.

All in all the books are perfect, I love the description of the environments they are in and all the finite details that go into character descriptions and ALL their interactions not matter what they were doing. They were so detailed it amazed me.

I am praying for more of this series. I think Nicky Charles is my new favorite author right now. So if you are doubting whether or not you will enjoy this series, I say take the plunge you will be glad you did. Especially if you love werewolves or are curious just download it. You won't be disappointed.

Review by: Poets of TNBW on March 11, 2011 :
I debated writing a review for this book because on one hand, it's very good for a self-published book. On the other, it has a few flaws that would keep it from being traditionally published. I'm not sure how honest of a review is really warranted.

I've read all three books in the series. They are all quite readable.

The good news for this one is the plot is clean, the action well-described, the writing solid. The characters are consistant from one book to the next.

The bad news is that the book needs to be content edited. It's clear the author has taken pains to clean the mechanical issues and structure problems out of the text. It's very well-edited in that respect.

However, it needs content edited. In this book, Bryan repeats similiar statements about 'Finding' law in multiple places. It feels heavy handed and I can see the writer working behind the scenes. The same was true of the Keeping as well. The author kept explaining it over and over to the reader until it was annoying.

Many scenes can be cut from this book to make it a tighter more-driven plot. As it is, I found myself wanting to skim sections because I was bored or felt like I was getting information I didn't need for this book.

I understand the author is working on a series but I don't need all the info on the characters outside this story. A small update would be find. This story is padded on both ends with material I don't need. A content editor would help the writer cut and compact the story to give a better, tighter story line. 125,000 words or less.

Plus several scenes in the book could be crunched down into one scene that would give me the same info and doesn't drag the plot to a crawl.

Overall, it's a good book but it could be a much better book.
For free? I have no complaints but with a little more cutting and I'd be glad to pay for it.

Very good story and nicely told. As always Nicky Charles’ words flow effortlessly, and she is exceptionally descriptive. I missed the dialogue and passion that were so prominent in the first two books, but the story took a different direction, more suspense than romance. I always love it when you get to revisit with the main characters from previous books, and they were all present throughout the story. Her other books had more of a steam factor, and this one was lacking in that respect. Being this is a story about werewolves I guess I’ve come to expect it considering their primal nature. I would love to see her continue the series, not only do I think Sam has story, but Daniel and Tessa too! It was an enjoyable read. Keep writing Nicky Charles...you have a lot of fans.

After months of waiting,,, here it is! The finding..
i just finished reading this a while ago... and well
couple of months of waiting more than worth it.
I love all this writer's books. Forever in time, The Mating, The Keeping, and this 3rd book of Law of Lycan "The finding".
The Finding is a story about a loner werewolf Cassie who doesn't want to accept what she really is so then she tried her real best not to be (or hide) what she's supposed to be. And Bryan,ex-lover of Elise in 'The Mating', is the one appointed to find this untrained innocent werewolf to join their pack.
His character in the 1st book never made me this interested in him. Miss Charles really knows how to make every character in her books enchanting in their own unique features.
And she knows really well how to satisfy her readers.
Great art! It deserves to have more than this number of stars ***** :)

I cannot say that I didn't enjoy this book but not nearly as much as "The Mating" or "The Keeping". It doesn't measure up as far as being romantic/erotic. I don't mind the suspense (that added to the story) but I like the hot stuff too and it just wasn't present in this book. Even when Bryan and Cassie finally got together (in the last 8 pages of the book) it was pretty tame. The first three quarters of the book Cassie didn't even seem like she liked Bryan. She was always fighting him and trying to get away from him. That irritated me. Bryan and Cassy eventually lived in the same pack house together for six months and she never even so much as touched him below the waist. And Bryan didn't want to take her because he wanted to make sure it's what she wanted. Oh come on, let's get real here. Nicky couldn't write a bad book. This one just didn't do it for me like the first two did. HOWEVER, the story between Damien and Sam sounds like it has potential to be really good. Nicky, put the hot stuff back in!!! But most important....PLEASE GET WELL.

Overall it was a very entertaining read and I would love for another book to be written with Sam and the computer geek at Ryne's also needs to entice his love I guess that's wishful thinking for future books. Loved it!!

Congratulations Nicky for writing another brilliant story. This book is fantastic, just like the previous two in The Law of The Lycans series. I was completely unable to put any of them down until finished. I have recommended this book to my friends and would definitely recommend to any one reading this review. Along with The Mating and The Keeping!

It was great reading about Kane & Elise and Ryan & Melody again and how life was going for the couples. Not forgetting, finally hearing Cassy and Bryans story!!

Would love to hear more about Sam and Damien. A very interesting story seems to be looming in that direction. Also Daniel and Tessa - would love to hear about them too!

Hope your feeling better soon and well enough to continue your fantastic series. It would be great to hear more! Would also love to buy the series in paper form - well worth it!!

I loved this book, the series is amazing. I'm hoping she writes another book. The werewolves are so dreamy. I think Ryne is my favorite, but Bryan is giving him lots of competition. I recommend this book to everyone.

I am new to shape shifters and was introduced to Nicky Charles' Mating by accident. I loved it then read The Keeping a few weeks ago and of course jumped for joy at release of The Finding this week. I love Nicky's writing, great plot, sexy without being tacky. I enjoy reading her books and appreciate the lack of constant profanity. I give this book two thumbs up!! Keep writing and I will keep reading. Classy Work! I have been eagerly sharing the three books with my friends. Looking forward to the next book.

3rd book in the series.

This was a really good series and I can see more stories coming from the books but I don't feel this left me hanging with untold stories.

Cassandra Greyson witnessed a werewolf killing a man and her Uncle shot.
She ran off after hearing her uncle say she was a werewolf, at 17 years old it was the first she heard of it. Also she knew the Keeper law that anyone who knew of the werewolves would die. She ran with the fear of the killer wolf coming to get her.

After three years Bryan Cooper still was intrigued with finding Cassandra. It was never far from his mind and for some reason his wolf held on to the scent of her from three years ago.

This book is so full of adventures and twists and turns. Nicky makes the wolves such a unique tale. They are part of the people but yet individual.

This third book in Nicky Charles' "Law of the Lycans" series was by far the most complex. The plot was much more intricate as there were many players and points of views. I found that I had to force myself to slow down and really take my time when reading the plot for fear of missing something.

As with the first 2 books, I found that the main characters were each very distictive with very clear points of view. What I liked the most about this third book was that Nicky brought everyone together and it was done in a such a way as to show how each of them had grown and how their relationships had changed.

The struggle between Cassie and Bryan to understand one another made this book very believable and I found myself relating to the characters on a "real life" level.

I hope Nicky continues with the series!

I loved this book - and all of the other "were" books written by Nicky Charles. This book is every bit as good as the Mating and the Finding. I have to agree with the other reviews, this is my favorite series. I hope that there will be more to come.

I loved getting a new mating too. I do hope we find out about Sam and the Chicago pack, so please keep writing Ms. Charles! Hope you're feeling better soon.

I've been on a Nicky Charles bender - 3 books in less than a week. A different tone from the other 3 but still very good. An undertone of sexuality rather than 'in your face' sex which shows she can carry a plot and not just write sex scenes. A slow build up - seems to be her style - with some great action at the end. The multiple points of view were well done. Charles can 'get in the head' of her characters and make each one unique and interesting. I liked seeing fav characters from her previous stories as well. These books were a great way to spend some of my vacation time!

Review by: Jan Gordon on Feb. 12, 2011 :
The Finding, third in the Law of the Lycans series by Nicky Charles, doesn’t disappoint. Bryan and Cassie’s story moves between Ontario, Las Vegas, and Chicago. It’s a story of love, addiction, and greed.

Although this book is more PG (i.e. less sex) than the previous two in the series, it is no less enjoyable. It kept me reading, and when I finished I felt bereft as if good friends who had been visiting had left me alone. The love story between Bryan and Cassie was necessarily more innocent than those of Kane and Elise or Ryne and Melody, due to Cassie’s age and upbringing. However, the slow build-up in their relationship lent a realism to the story that made it completely believable.

A thoroughly enjoyable read and one I have no hesitancy in recommending.
