Outline of The Whisperers
Megan Brease’s Whisperers were two imaginary friends, constant childhood companions. Their name for her was Pinky, the only name she would answer to until she was three.
By the time Megan is ten she has almost forgotten about Whisperers and turned into a sensible, bright little girl. Her sensible world is upset when her family moves house and she is befriended by a peculiar old woman, Edna Touchstone, and drawn into the rescue of a wizard.
Days before Megan moves home she hears voices in her bedroom using the mysterious incomprehensible language she spoke until she was three. But these are not her Whisperers.
The Brease's new neighbour, Edna Touchstone, a reclusive old woman who brews herbal medicines and keeps thousands of books that she can’t even read, not only knows all about Whisperers but understands their language.
Megan’s imaginary world threatens to spill over into the real one when the old woman tries to make her believe that only wizards have Whisperers and that Megan must be the new wizard who has come to help rescue Spillwater.
The stolen wizard seems to be just an old man who has been put in a private nursing home for his own good. But that is not how Edna, the Bookkeeper, and the Whisperers, the guardians of wizards, see it. According to them witches have taken him.
Megan is far too sensible to want to believe any of it but she is unable to avoid being drawn by strange circumstances and events into Edna’s plot to rescue Spillwater. Everyday coincidences, to Megan little more than accidents, are looked on as powerful spells by Edna and the Whisperers.
When her mum finds work in the old people’s home Megan befriends the old man. She has such an effect on him that the staff even trust her to walk him in the garden, unaccompanied. A disaster strikes the home when a rotten bathroom floor gives way soaking all the old people below and causing panic. In the confusion Spillwater runs away.
Edna and the Whisperers believe Spillwater's amazing rescue is the work of a powerful new wizard. Megan is awarded her wizard’s cloak and her new name: Tubdrop. Wizards are always named after their first spell.
The nursing home turns out to be a racket to exploit old people. When the witches who own the nursing home fight back and invoke the law to force Spillwater’s return, Tubdrop performs magic and defeats them.
