Interview with E Taylor

Published 2015-06-07.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a comfortable home built by my father, on a 12 acre hobby farm on a hillside in a small town in rural Ontario, 30 minutes east of the Nation's Capital. By day my dad worked in computing but after hours he was always reading or researching and planning his next big project. I was fortunate to witness and participate in the process from beginning to end -- that's how I learned to become a do-er.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It wasn't a story -- it was a bio about the Wright Brothers for a fifth grade paper. That's when I first became interested in flying, then started taking lessons when I was 15, soloed at 16 and eventually earned my pilot's license.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Usually you'll find me on the lacrosse field coaching boys lacrosse; however, lately I've become a wine enthusiast and enjoy learning about new wines, wine growing regions and wine makers from around the world.
Describe your desk
People say it's extremely neat and organized. A 21" flat screen monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse on a mousepad, a wired phone extension that is set to do not disturb, docking station for my laptop, a fishbowl with a mini-easter island sculpture for a betta fish named "Ollie" and with nothing else to distract me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Edgar Allen Poe, "The Tell-Tale Heart" - scared the crap out of me and I barely slept for days!
Why do you think the way you do?
The nature of the industry that I work in is extremely dynamic and I am constantly reading technical papers, articles and testing new ideas. I also tend to think in terms of tactics and strategy due to my lengthy coaching career. This particular combination makes me think the way I do.
