Interview with Alexander Dingeman

Published 2015-08-28.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not quite. But I do remember the story that got me interested in writing. It could only be described as a "Super Parody" that I co-wrote with a friend. That's all I can say about it though, on the off chance it becomes a movie someday.
What is your writing process?
I usually start by coming up with a premise and thinking: "Why hasn't anyone made a story like this yet?" Then I take it upon myself to write that story. I often come up with the key plot points while spacing off in school or at work. I write off and on whenever I'm in the mood but if I ever go to long without writing then my characters will start having dialogues in my head and won't shut up until I put it on the page.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I was way too young to remember the first story that I've ever read but I do remember reading "War of the Worlds" in 5th grade. I enjoyed that book so much that I went on to read other classic books like "1984" and "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". I didn't understand the social commentary until I was older though.
How do you approach cover design?
Honestly I'm pretty lazy about that. Sometimes I draw my own covers but most of the time I ask someone else to make a cover for me.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Catcher in the Rye, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, War of the Worlds, Treasure Island, and the first Artemis Fowl. I thought they were interesting stories. It's as simple as that.
What do you read for pleasure?
I usually don't read for pleasure because I prefer visual storytelling. My reading usually consists of research for one of my plays or research based in curiosity of the subject matter.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My smartphone. I always have it on hand so it's convenient.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
So far giving stuff away for free has been the best advertising tactic. That's one advantage of using Smashwords since not evey distributer likes that sort of thing.
Describe your desk
Um... Desk? How professional do you think I am? The world is my desk!
Where did you grow up and how did this influence your writing?
I've spent my whole life so far in Des Moines, Iowa. It hasn't influenced my writing much because all of my stories take place in more interesting locations.
