Interview with Brian Wheeler

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The discovery of the process gives me the widest smile. I have found, no matter how I might try to diagram and plot the path of a writing project at the start, that I never know where my creative efforts are going to take me. I enjoy the serendipity of finding the story as I bang away at one of my old typewriters. I like best seeing how the characters appear to, almost magically, change from the original inspiration that sparked them in my imagination to something I had not at all anticipated. Plot doesn’t come easy for me, so I love it when I finally stumble on just the right path just when I think I’m lost. I like the surprise. It gives me great joy when the story starts breathing with life of its own.
What is your writing process?
I try to map out the first two or three scenes and then just jump into it. If I feel I need to slow down, I will write my story with a pen and a notebook, but most of the time, I spend my first draft behind a typewriter. The sound of the keys clicking along on the paper keeps me going. It also helps that I cannot so easily go back and revise and correct everything. The typewriter just forces me to keep going so that I find my story. I then retype everything into the computer. A lot of my friends make sick faces when I tell them this, but retyping it into the computer is how I do so much of my revision. My stories take about three drafts on average. I cannot be creative at all in front of the computer. I think I would surprise a lot of people with how "old-school" my process is with my notebooks and my old typewriters.
Describe your desk
I use two desks. I put my old typewriter on the antique typist desk I picked up at an auction, and that's where I hammer out my first draft. Then, I polish and upload my stories on my shining computer that sits on top of the desk I made out of flooring and two-by-fours that were left over after I renovated my home. I find one of my best cures for writer's block to be to get away from the desk and try to write in some new surroundings until I get going again.
How do you approach cover design?
I wonder sometimes if I might be dooming myself with this approach, but I DO NOT want a cover that looks like every other slick, polished cover the publishing industry pushes - the stock photos, the gradient into the text. I like strong colors, and I like to play with text fonts. I like art. I think the covers of most publishers are terribly boring. I don't want that at all. I wish I was a better illustrator, but I make due.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I cannot remember its title, but I wrote a story about a robotic tiger running around and terrorizing a space station. I went back to the memory of that story last year with my story "Butcher, Baker and Replicant Maker." Oh, I nearly forgot I wrote a fourth installment to the Star Wars saga when I was a boy - I think Han Solo shot Greedo's twin brother in it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My parents had a book of fairy tales rewritten for very young children, and a book of Bible stories for very young children. They were big, hardcover books with wonderful illustrations. I remember those two books really hooked me when I was very young. Like a lot of kids, The Hobbit hooked me in the school library. I also remember reading "Escape from Warsaw" on my own. That seems to be the first book I really remember reading completely on my own as a child.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Tim Powers, so admire how he blends elements of fantasy into our contemporary world. I do not pass up any of Dan Simmons' novels. Harlan Ellison has become my favorite science fiction writer. Neil Gaimann. Phil Rickman. Roger Zelazny. Ray Bradbury.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my iPad.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I sift through authors who are similar to those I really enjoy. I do not put much any kind of stock at all into "bestseller" lists, as I think "bestsellers" are very, very overrated. I want to read ebooks written by authors who are brave enough to develop their own style, voice and story. I will shirk away from a lot of ebooks that are pushed by big publishers. I want creativity and originality. I am so tired of the shoebox, formula stuff the publishing houses continue to push through the pipe.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Raising my daughter Kate, who turns a year old here soon. Playing with and training my dogs. Trying to make a living as a freelance designer from a home office. Working around the house. Watching old television shows from the 80's. Chasing about on all the errands that bite into most anyone's daily schedule. I have not yet achieved the luxury where I can devote my days to writing. Writing has to remain a hobby for the time-being.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have two German shepherds and a mutt-huskie. That pack wakes me at the same time each morning. Trying to let those dogs out before one of them has to go on my carpet shakes me out of bed pretty quick.
What are you working on next?
I have a handful of ideas for some new novellas - a mixed martial artist whose face, when staring at one of his fans, magically shows the pain that fan is about to inflict on his or her loved ones, a magic radio that gives children the power to guide a baseball game, another story of the dog-king Gareth and his sister Wren. But currently, I am about half way through a first draft at another novel attempt, a science fiction novel set upon a fallen world. Things hit me at unexpected times. I try to finish whatever project I am working on before starting a new project, lest I never complete anything.
