Interview with Celine Healy

Published 2013-09-16.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. I started on this journey of self discovery when I read Norma Vincent Peale's : The Power of Positive Thinking. At the time I was lecturing in Accounting at a College in Sydney, and I was searching for more meaning and contribution in my life.
It certainly opened my eyes to a world of a different way of thinking. From there I set out on a quest. It led me to my favourite topic: IDENTITY.
I found that I was on the wrong Life Path for my specific innate skills and abilities. In fact I did not recognize that the natural talents that I had were actual skills at all.
So my path changed and I now work in the areas of spiritual and human identity. I found that when you clarify your identity, you can change your life.
From there I branched into helping people, particularly career women and women in business, not only clarify who they are so that they can make the contribution that they'd like, but also, help them write their own stories, become a self published author.
So, yes. That first book set me off on a train of thought that I have pursued to a specific destination.
How do you approach cover design?
When I am thinking about cover design, I tell me designer what the book is about, and send him a summary of the book so that he can decipher what I want.
My designer has made some great covers when we collaborate in this way. In general, what he does first is usually the best option.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favourite books are all non fiction, as that is what I am most interested in are:
1. IDENTITY Your Passport to Success by Stedman Graham
2. The Identity Code by Larry Ackerman
3. The Path of Least Resistance by Robert Fritz
4. The Magic of Thinking Success by Dr David J Schwartz, and
5. Flying Solo by Gerrish, Leader and Crocker
The first two hone in on my topic of interest, and in fact, I had not read them before I narrowed down my own area of interest. They both point out the value of knowing who you are as a way of life and becoming successful.
The third book is of special interest because it outlines a new way of getting what you want. Instead of muddying the waters when making a decision or setting a goal for what you want to achieve, the objective is to observe the reality of the situation, and use that as the basis rather than using emotion and belief as a way of choice.
The fifth book is a guide to solo business entrepreneurs who are sitting there at home and trying to develop a business. Very useful tips to get you going and help you through the tough times.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read romance and detective stories, or who dun its.
I particularly like historic romance fiction as I get to learn about various times periods, the fashion and mores of the day.
I love the who dun its because I become so involved in the plot trying to work out who the killer is before the end.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't have one at present and just use my PC.
I read a lot of ebooks online mostly.
I am old fashioned and prefer to pick up a book and make notes in it and so on.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I have used a variety of free techniques such as PR Statements, FB, Twitter and Blogging. However, I do not have the expertise to do this and have now hired social media contractors to do that for me.
Describe your desk
Hmm. Looking at it right now it is a shambles. I have piles of things to do, a four tiered in-tray, books and notes everywhere. Today I have it on my list to tidy it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a farm in Queensland, a state of Australia. I now live near Sydney.
I think the loneliness or the isolation is what has influenced my writing as writing is a very solitary and isolated existence.
In saying that, I started out writing scripts for movies, which came out of nowhere. So, I am not sure how tht one fits in.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in about the early 2000's when I wrote articles for women's networking groups and accounting journals.
Somehow I changed to script writing soon after when I met a guy in a bar, as you do, and the rest is history.
From there I branched into non fiction books with three seemingly distinct categories: spiritual identity, human identity and writing and self publishing. Somehow they all seem to blend.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book: How to Write a Book? How to Publish? developed from a conversation with a few people when they asked me how I had managed to write and publish my books. I had written two at that stage. It seemed like an opening as I had done the course and learnt a lot and wanted to make it easier and less expensive for budding writers to become published authors. So I wrote the book and developed some seminars.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I never really saw myself as an author. I had thought that a 'real' author was a fiction writer and I did not think that I had the talent to write intriguing stories. So I chose the non fiction arena. Because I was new to my topic and I felt that I could not compete with established authors in that area, I chose to become an Indie author.
I have total control over my project from beginning to end, and I love that aspect. I had written, produced and directed a movie once, and because it was my first, I had total control over the whole process and that appealed to me enormously. So, being an Indie author is kind of rebellious, and that appeals to me.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has made my books available to a wider audience. The resources available has been invaluable and I am sure that I will have continuing success as I write more and people discover me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love creating something from nothing. You just make it up. It is the biggest fun you can have as a hobby.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love people reading my books and being able to help them as the books are intended.
Without fans books are just collections of pages.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a how to publish book for fiction writers, a new book on the creative process and a book on identity. There are so many ideas and so many stories just waiting to be told.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The act of creation and how I can contribute to someone's well being.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read a lot. I do Sudoku's and I love to watch movies.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am an avid researcher online so that's how I do it.
if I want to learn something then I type it in and see what comes up.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was about stress and how to overcome living a stressful life.
It was published in a women's networking magazine.
What is your writing process?
I think of a topic, the go into my creative zone and then I do some research and then I just write.
I write quickly, which gets it done.
