What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Free books and I love giving my readers freebies.
Describe your desk
Faces a wall so that I won't be distracted by the outdoors. It is cluttered with research notes, and my character bible information sheets.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Whitestone, in Queens, NY and then after I was thirteen in Baldwin, LI. Tough age to have to move and fit in, and of course all that experience came with me to adulthood.
When did you first start writing?
Started reading--really reading when I was ten, and started writing when I was twelve.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Murder and romance in regency England.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had written for Random House, Zebra Books, and Doubleday for over twenty years. Took a break, and when I
came back, Indie was just coming into its own. I liked the idea of being able to write, (with an editor and a proofreader of course) freely within the genre of my choice. So glad I went Indie. Loving it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a must for all Indie authors for many reasons. They are helpful, give insight and present our works to the readers as well as to many ebook publishers. LOVE Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Bringing my characters to life, describing the places I have been in the context of my tale and hearing from my
readers that I transported them into the story.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I love my readers. I learn from them. I take their reviews (even the reviews that make me go 'huh') and learn from them.
What are you working on next?
Hungry Moon-Destiny, the next book in my shapeshifter series.
Who are your favorite authors?
LOVE Karen Marie Moning, Candice Stauffer, Nora Roberts, James Patterson, Dean Koontz, and King.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
We have horses and with that quite a bit of land to maintain. Working fences, outdoor chores, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and traveling. We also have a wolf and her hybrid son and they keep us busy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Spring Gambit was my first novel and I received a contract for it, three weeks after I presented it to Fawcett.
How do you approach cover design?
I have an amazing artist, Kendra Egert and she knows me and what I want and we work wonderfully together.
