Interview with Gail Cruise

Published 2014-07-31.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to pursue hobbies, most recently I have developed green thumbs. I enjoy designing and making clothing and accessories too. Oh, occasionally I clean the house.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I browse the internet, a good friend directed me to Smashwords and I use it now.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh! Rather embarrassing story, ask me in person.
What is your writing process?
I usually think for a long while, then I put my thoughts down in long hand first. Once I start with an idea then it just rolls from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I do not remember the first one I ever read, probably a Janet and John story from primary school. The first story I really enjoyed was in a comic, when I was a teenager. A character named Valda. I wanted to wear nothing but a swim dress for the longest time...oh and live forever!
How do you approach cover design?
I think about the story first. I actually set a bunch of feathers on a photo copy machine once; and I liked the resultant frame it made and I used it as a background for a framed picture of my step son on my wall.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1984 by Orwell was the first serious book I read at school, on the curriculum, at about age 11, and it scared me back then.
The old curiosity shop by Dickens. That's a story every child should read. I watched both versions of the movie too.
Crime and punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The morality, oh, the morality! Loved the movie of it too.
One flew over the cuckoo's nest by Ken Kesey. loved that movie too! Jack Nicholson is a superb actor.
That 'fine Scottish play' by Shakespear, in secondary school I read the part of 'herself'.
Another Dickens one, Great expectations. The book and the film at again.
Oh, and Marcel Proust on 'how to put a book down'. Tons of stuff but this is what springs to my mind immediately and I enjoyed them all because they are thought provoking and character building...they tell me!
What do you read for pleasure?
Whatever happens to catch my eye most often.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My desktop computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Not tried any yet.
Describe your desk
Erm...I could lie and say it's nice and tidy?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Northumberland, near the Scottish border, a wealth of happy experiences were an inspiration to me. The single largest influence was my secondary school English teacher. Class was in the library, desks arranged in a horseshoe with the teacher's desk at the open end. Oh, and great fellow students!
When did you first start writing?
I first started putting stuff together seriously in secondary school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have not yet published this latest one. The story is based around a therapist's office and her various clients, I set it 20 or so years ago (still to be determined though) and I want to make correlations between still the same and more modern outlooks and treatments; I am a bit off completion with that piece though. My previous works need one quick edit and they are good to go. One is a love story (awww) and the other is a screenplay, in which I would like to emphasize that not every old man in a park is a pedophile.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have no idea what an indie author is? I can hazard a guess and say indie authors use Smashwords? My inspiration for choosing this forum is a friend of mine who has used it successfully.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I really do not know yet, I am hoping!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy is finding inspiration and seeing ideas take shape in my mind; and then on paper.
What do your fans mean to you?
They assist the air conditioning in keeping my desk area cool.
What are you working on next?
I have absolutely no idea yet.
Who are your favorite authors?
I like so many that I cannot even begin to list favorites.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Coffee.
