Interview with Thomas P. Tiernan

Published 2023-03-25.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first story in High School. It was about a teenager torn between his parents and his new girlfriend. he hangs himself at the end. My teachers liked it, but I didn't write more until college.
In college, I worked for my college magazine. I had two stories printed there. I also wrote the first of my John Pentgram stories. Pentgram is a detective who is bitten by a werewolf. Since then, I have written a dozen stories about Pentgram and his Paranormal adventures.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Curious Journey of Emily Breck is the story of a young woman who dies seven times during the novel's run. Her adventures take her from a dirty apartment in Manhattan to Port Charlotte, Florida. Each time she dies, her hair gets darker and she gets more intelligent.
Her deaths all come via a different story genre type. Without spoiling anything, she is killed by a life-sucking ghost, Men In Black, a demon, and a pair of homicidal farmers. the story is filled with humor and never gets gruesome or too dark. Along the way, she finds romance with guys she almost always crashes into.
Emily is an optimist who keeps moving forward no matter what happens to her. She learns to face her death with a sense of humor because she knows she'll come back seconds later. during her short lives, she makes friends and makes the most of every situation.
The story came from a bad head cold I had in April 2020. I woke up and wrote down some notes and went to bed. In the morning, I looked at my notes and started to write. In ten months, I had a 750-page book. Eight chapters and seven lives. I spent a year editing and correcting it. I am now searching for an agent for Emily Breck.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have a lot of stories inside of me. Self-Publishing gives me the opportunity to get my works in print.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's another avenue where people can find my books. They have a large reach.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating new worlds and new characters to move through them. To be somewhere and have a story hit me is a great Thrill. The inspiration can come anywhere, any time.
Six summers ago, I was standing at the edge of the water in Hollywood, Florida at sundown. The water splashed against my shins as I looked out toward the horizon. I had a thought. Anything could be lurking under the water, just out of sight. it could rise up and grab me, and no one would see it.
I ran back to our hotel room and began to write an outline for a new novel. This turned into Blood On The Sand, a novel about a writer who moves to Hollywood and soon discovers that over 100 people have disappeared along the Florida coast during a 40-year period. The killings happen so randomly and in different places that no one realizes it's the work of a single, murderous creature with a taste for human flesh.
The key for me was that I only wrote the book while I was in Florida. I wrote while immersed in the ambiance of Florida. In five vacations, I finally finished the book.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are everything. Without them, I would be writing for myself. that is not very inspirational. Having fans gives me the incentive to be at my peak creativity.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a Vella Serial Novel on Amazon. The Title is "Of Thieves, Dragons, and Ohara."
Max O'Hara is on his way home one night and drives into a black square in the road. He wakes up in the mud in a medieval village. He has been transported to Vareima, a world of magic, dragons, and intrigue. When he arrives, he sets off an ancient prophecy that will bring the entire world to the brink of destruction in a world-wide war.
A second work being plotted is about the adventures of the Bride of Frankenstein.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jules Verne
Donald Westlake/Richard Stark
Michael Crichton
H. G. Wells
Robert E. Howard
H. P. Lovecraft
Robert B. Parker
Tim Dorsey
Mark Twain
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I write every day from 6:45 am until my wife gets up at 8:15 am. This gives me lots of time to do my minimum 1000 words a day. I find my creative juices flow best at this early time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I sell things on Mrcari, and listing things takes time.
I take classes online to help my Writing career. There is a lot to learn about self-publishing. I also contribute to my Facebook writing pages I am enrolled in.
A great passion of mine is Board Games. Our collection is extensive and we play at a weekly venue every Wednesday evening. My part-time job at a small post office inside a pharmacy keeps me busy during the weekday afternoons.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My interests are varied, and I am always looking for new information for my writing. I am fascinated by the world around me and can find inspiration everywhere. Sometimes, I'll see an interview with an author and will read one of their books. This leads to more authors similar to that writer, and it snowballs into a bunch of new writers to read.
