Interview with Glen L K Palmer

Published 2014-02-24.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to search Amazon and smash words for things I might be interested in. Also I belong to a few online book clubs and forums, so I find good books by recommendations form them too.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Wow, that's a hard one. Well, I think the first short story I ever wrote was a story about a boy that found a secret portal to another universe. It was quite silly as I was only young. In fact, I think I still have it somewhere.
What is your writing process?
There is a lot of pre planning that goes into my writing. I like to know exactly what I want to write about before it's written. I use Outlines and blueprints for this. If I know what is going to be on every page before it's started helps me to unlock my creativity.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I can remember reading was Rikki Tikki Tavi by Rudyard Kipling. I loved reading that short story, I was very young when I read it and it was the first time I used my imagination to paint a picture of the brave little mongoose.
How do you approach cover design?
Firstly I get ideas from covers in my genre, not all the time, as at times I already have an inmate in mind. Then all I do is go to Fiverr and get one done from one of my favourite designers. Nothing complex, just nice, simple and clean design.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1.) The Shawshank Redemption - loved the movie and the book, just awe inspiring.
2.) Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy - what an imagination, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.
3, 4 & 5.) Lord of the rings trilogy - again, fantastic imagination and great story, thoroughly enjoyable read and never a dull moment.
What do you read for pleasure?
Horror and sci-fi / fantasy. I like the idea of scaring myself out of my wits and reading stuff that just may happen in the future.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle without a shadow of a doubt. As soon as Apple brings out anti-glare screens, then it will be the iPad, but for now Kindle all the way.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social Media has been very good to me. FaceBook, Twitter, Linkedin, those kind of sites. Also writing forums has been a good one for me.
Describe your desk
Messy with a lot of clutter and pieces of paper strewn everywhere.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Africa. I loved my childhood and experiences there. It was telling stories around campfires on my summer holidays, that gave me the creativity to write.
