Interview with Honey Jans

Published 2014-07-14.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Every morning I'm excited to see what the day will bring me. It may be spending time with friends and family, discovering a new author who's books I'll read voraciously, or getting lost in one of my books. We only live once and we need to make the most of each day and not waste any of them.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to travel. I also love art, music, and trying new recipies.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have favorite authors and read everything the write. I also love finding new authors. I usually buy all my books on line although I have been known to haunt the bookstores and my local library.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was FOOLS GOLD, a sweet and spicy western romance, and frankly I'm still suprised that I had the moxie to do it. I knew absolutely nothing about the craft, but the premise wouldn't let me alone so I had to write it down. The opening line of, "I want a divorce," was just too tantilizing to not explore.
What is your writing process?
I tend to write in the morning and edit in the afternoon. But I do have to admit that I'm a night owl so you may find me at the computer in the wee hours of the morning.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. I walked down to the library all by myself and read LITTLE WOMEN by Lousia May Alcott. I loved it, and although I wasn't the best student/reader in the world as a child it started a love of reading in me.
How do you approach cover design?
It's usually more of a mood or character driven approach for me. As a cover artist I love seeing the scene so my readers will know what they're getting at a glance.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
There are so many. How do I list them all. I guess you could start with a new to me erotic romance author I discovered this winter Beth Kery. If you haven't read any of her books do yourself a favor and pick up one. I also love Jayne Ann Krentz, Katie MacAllister, Elizabeth Lowell, Debi Wilder, Shari Dare, and Lynn Crain.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything and everything. But as you can see from my books I love romance with a twist, be it erotic, suspensful, or paranormal.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love my Kindle.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I've dabbled with Facebook, BookBuzzer, and blogging, but I must cofess that self promotion is not my forte.
Describe your desk
Messy! I have a stack of papers on my right. A thumb drive, amazon gift card, and my library card on my left. And last but not least, tons of post it notes on my bulletin board. Also, behind me I have book shelves with many of my trade paperbacks.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the sleepy little mill town of Wisconsin Rapids. As you can guess by the name its on the rapids of the Wisconsin River.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing after my sister presented me with 2 grocery bags full of her old cast off romance novels. Well needless to say I dove in, being the headonist I am. :-) About half-way through the stack I said the famous last words of budding authors everywhere..."I think I can do that." The rest is history, or hysterically funny depending upon your point of view.
