Interview with Dionne Lister

What is your e-reading device of choice?
iPad, Kindle app.
Describe your desk
Ooh, it's a mess. Lots of notebooks, three cups full of pens, two or three dirty coffee cups, a crumby plate, one or two cats, paperwork I need to file, and the most important thing: my laptop. My desk is one my hubby found on the side of the road. It was a 1930s dining table someone had painted green. He stripped it back to reveal a gorgeous pale timber finish. It's Art Deco style with a massive semi-circle attaching the base to the tabletop.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a coastal spot in Sydney. I'm not sure how it influenced my writing in terms of technique, but my latest main character comes from Cronulla, which is a place I used to frequent often. Before kids came along, I used to surf just about every day. I had to stop when my baby bump became too big to lie on lol.
When did you first start writing?
I fell in love with writing and knew I wanted to be an author when I was about seven or eight.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A plethora of rejections from publishers and agents. I decided that they couldn't tell me I couldn't live my dream, so I went ahead and made it happen by myself :).
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords have been awesome. They introduced me to Apple Books, and I've had several successful features with them, and lately, Smashwords have been giving me promotions opportunities I wouldn't get anywhere else. Mark, Kevin, and the team are ultra helpful too. If I need extra help with stuff, they're always quick to get things done.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without fans, there is no success. I love it when fans contact me to tell me they enjoyed my book. If it weren't for the fans, I'd still write and love it, but there wouldn't be that amazing enjoyment I get from knowing I've entertained or connected with someone through my words. I love my fans. Just the fact that I have any is something I find amazing, so they're super important to me and hold a special place in my heart.
What are you working on next?
I have fourteen books to get done in my current cozy mystery series—currently writing book 9—but when that's done, I have to finish the second book in my epic fantasy series, The Rose of Nerine. Once that's done, I'll look at throwing ideas around for a new paranormal cozy mystery series.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love doing hapkido—a Korean martial art—and I edit books for other writers as my other day job. I also love reading (of course), and I have two kids who take up some time too. If I had more time, I'd surf and get back into drawing and painting.
What is your writing process?
I think of a book title and maybe think about the beginning, the main character, and the end, and then start writing, so I'm what they call a pantser. I try and write every day, but it doesn't always happen—procrastination is my middle name. I always write at my desk. I find that I can't be creative everywhere, and I listen to music when I write.
How do you approach cover design?
I have the most amazing cover artist, Robert Baird. I think of an idea I want. I explain it to him, and he comes back with 3 or 4 sample thumbnail sketches, and I pick which one I want, suggest any changes I need, and then he does his thing. He's super talented, and some of my success is definitely because the covers are original and gorgeous. They really draw the readers in.
