Interview with Jacqueline Martin

What is your writing process?
I am a psychic medium and I write non fiction, true life experiences that have a metaphysical connection. The Ebook I completed recently required a great deal of research to flesh out the story and characters involved, I enjoy research. Taking the time for research provides great feedback on my psychic work and shows me over and over that what I do is valuable. I can't see myself filling in imaginary information when facts will do much better.
What's the story behind your latest book?
In 2006 I delivered a psychic mediumship message to a relative of a women serving a 25 year prison sentence for murdering her child. The child provided me the information to me via clairaudience, so that the family would be able to receive it verbatim. Her aunt took that message to a cold case detective and he took a chance exploring the lead provided.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Three family members in Spirit visited me insisting that I tell their story, "write it, write it, tell our story." When I informed them that I wasn't a writer, they insisted for weeks, saying "you're the only one who knows the whole story." I agreed to do my best to tell their story fully and accurately. I believe I have accomplished that. I hope you will concur.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I like the combination of research and story telling. In my earlier life I expected that I would write historical fiction at some point because that is what I enjoy reading. Since then I have discovered the reality of real living people is much more interesting.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
In the third grade I wrote a short poem that the teacher read to the class. I recall her drawing attention to this "the air was soft". It opened my mind to the idea that writing could be art.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
We moved to an island in the Chesapeake Bay the summer between first and second grade. It was a lonely place for a six year old who was used to being a free range city kid. I read all of the Reader's Digest condensed books my parents had on hand. It was during that reading practice that I realized I was able to read anything and could teach myself about anything now.
How do you approach cover design?
So far it has been hit and miss designing on my own. I have used canned formats and added a photo or graphic to make it my own.
What do you read for pleasure?
Internet blogs are exciting, interesting and demonstrate a writers growth.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I can get by with the smart phone for e-reading but prefer the tablet.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Face to face marketing has been most successful for me. Who better than the author to create interest in a story?
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
When I was six my mother remarried, a career Marine, and I moved around the country for the next 12 years. The experience taught me to be flexible, unattached to material things and accepting. We all have places to go and things to do that may not include everyone else.
When did you first start writing?
I began my adult writing for a regional magazine, trading articles for advertising. I was trying to establish a new business and the budget was tight. The magazine was new and it helped us both.
