Interview with Jean Hoeft

Published 2014-07-29.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. It was a parody of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas'
What is your writing process?
Generally it starts with my insomnia. I can't sleep and my mind just goes off in it's own little world. I take any good ideas from that and just start writing. I slam out the concept of the story, then re-read it over and over expanding on it as I go.
How do you approach cover design?
I usually want to have something that is part of the story on the cover. To me it ties it all in and if it's done right, a good cover can be the deciding factor if the book is chosen for reading.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly true crime, horror, thriller, love stories, erotica, and just recently I have started to read stories involving witches and wizards.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I honestly don't own one. I still prefer the tactile feeling of a real book in my hands. Something about turning actual pages still draws me in.
Describe your desk
Depending really. If I have been really busy, it looks like a tornado hit it. If I have been spending lots of time writing, It's generally pretty tidy with exception of my notes for the project I am working on or one of the editing copies of that work.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Edmonton Alberta Canada. I don't think where I grew up has had any influence on my writing. It's more how I grew up and the type of person I am.
When did you first start writing?
As a young child. I used to make up fantasy stories of a wonderful family that I belonged to where I was happy and accepted.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book. Hmmm. I actually started as a night mare I had one night and I evolved it from there.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With my family and friends mostly. I am an active person too and run frequently. Generally I can be found outside either working on something for the house or yard or I'm enjoying the outdoors running, mountain biking, or playing sports.
