Interview with John Pateman-Gee

Published 2024-02-17.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love the discworld series, Soul Music was the first book to make me laugh out loud. Anything with a degree of wit and a sense of adventure.
What are you working on next?
I have a new idea for another story, this time set in present day, a little science fiction this time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With family and friends and working as a planning officer. Sadly have to pay the bills or would write all day.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
A dog call Kipper gets me up. There is no choice.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was actually a star trek tng story. I was 15. I still have never seen the idea for that story ever used in the countless shows and stories since. Perhaps I should have another look at it. Think replicators and why don't they just do that for whole ships?
What is your writing process?
I suppose I should have one. Knight behind the pillar was started by just writing and seeing how far I could go before thinking of a plan. Then I just found it all fitted. First time luck? Since then I found I love layers and lots of detail to be discovered. I tend to have an idea of the end chapter and so know where I am going.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I struggled with reading as a kid, but when I was 9 years old I saw the Neverending Story, strangely a film about a book. I was inspired to get the actual book. It's not a short story and nothing like the film! However I was determined to read it and read as much as I could after that. I didn't look back.
How do you approach cover design?
There is lots of mystery in the books and I wanted to reflect that. Tor does not see everything the audience might think he does. I wanted the cover to reflect this. The words are grey for a reason.
Describe your desk
Also called a dining room table.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I have lived all my life in Suffolk UK. So adventure beyond in mountains and valleys will always be appealing.
When did you first start writing?
For the current books, about a week before my second daughter was born. I am not sure why I thought I would have the time!
