Interview with K. Newman

Published 2013-12-05.
What is your writing process?
It starts with inspiration. If I'm not inspired to write, the book can go in a completely different direction. I have a spot that I sit down to write at every time, it is comfortable and cozy. Hot chocolate has been my friend on the days that are chilly and a green tea frappuccino on the warm days. Lately I have created playlists to help with my writing process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember reading G.K. Chesterton's "Orthodoxy". It's funny, but I hated reading at that time and just felt that book made me look smarter--I have since changed my ways, but still find that book amazing.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design has to do with what is in the book for me. If there is a place that the characters frequently visit or something that is symbolic within the book I like to capture that in a picture. There have been a few times when I wish I could convey exactly what I was looking for in cover design with an illustrator, that will be part of my journey as a writer for the next books. :)
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I wish I could say G.K. Chesterton, because it would make me feel smart again, but unfortunately it is not among my favorite.
Instead of favorite books I am going to put authors because they are amazing: Suzanne Brockmann, Johanna Lindsey, Stephanie Meyer, Veronica Roth, and Suzanne Collins.
What do you read for pleasure?
The genre I most prefer is a mix: fantasy, young adult, romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my iPhone which has a Kindle app and an iBooks app. I like that because I know there is always something to read and I don't have to worry if I forgot my Kindle. Never can go without a book to read!!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
This is my first try, I will keep you posted!
Describe your desk
The place where I do my writing is on a lap desk surrounded by fluffy blankets and pillows. I have erasable index cards and a white board marker to put ideas on or erase as needed. And my mac computer.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up out in the sticks, it has taught me the importance of using the five senses in creating the setting. It's not helpful when I say "She was standing in the driveway." When compared with, "The wind whipped her hair around her face as she stood in the driveway. Leaves were blowing and the breeze carried the scent of the soon coming fall."
When did you first start writing?
I wrote a lot of poetry in high school. My first attempt at writing a book started roughly four years ago.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is how even when there is an attempt at a new and better world, even that can be corrupted because of the human condition.
