Interview with Kami Tullis

Published 2016-01-21.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to create a cover that is visually appealing, while communicating the overall feel of the book, in hopes that anyone who likes the cover will enjoy what's behind it.
Describe your desk
At the moment, I don't have a desk... There may be one in storage, but I am more comfortable in a nice chair.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a very small town, in Southwestern Utah. I absolutely love it, here. I think living in a place where everyone knows each other and is kind to one another, and seeing the absence of that at times, really made me see what one person's influence can be. I write to lift people up. I hope I can do that effectively.
When did you first start writing?
Professionally, I am a new author, so I can say accurately that I haven't been writing for long. "Angels in Training: Penny and Pete" is my first fictional writing, and I published it yesterday. I am hoping to write a lot more. Speaking of writing in general terms, I started writing in High School (for the school newspaper). I wrote a lot of papers, and only one fictional story, in college.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I work at an elementary school, and I often get reports of teasing from students. I think most of us experience that to one degree or another, when we're growing up. I wanted to write a story that could help kids see that there is help, even beyond their teachers and parents, and that everyone is special. Maybe someone will read it and understand that they are special.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My favorite part of this process was watching people's reactions as they read the book. If they laughed or got tears in their eyes, I knew I'd done my job.
What are you working on next?
I will be working on a book about another Angel in Training very soon.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I know it's cheesy, but love gets me out of bed each day. Love of God, love for my family and friends, love of my work, and a desire to be the best person I can be is my motivation.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to get recommendations from friends and family. I also use the filters when searching online, and I do utilize the samples to see if I like the author's voice if possible.
