Interview with Karen Umberger

Published 2015-05-30.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was about 12 or 13. I had a favorite boyband at that age and would write little "plays" starring my the band and myself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind Dark Secrets is a strange one actually. I had come up with the idea for and actually wrote a chapter that wound up being about halfway through the book. I continued on from there, then went back and finished the book by starting it. In other words, I wrote the first chapters of the book after I had written the last chapters. I think the idea originally came to me for that catalyst chapter from wanting to see if I could write something darker than the fare I usually wrote.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It has always been a dream of mine to become an author, I have always loved the written word. I write in hopes that others will enjoy what I write, so I figured I would take that step and put my work out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There is a two-fold answer to this question. As stated in another question I want people to enjoy my writing, so when I get positive feedback from someone who has read something I have written that is part of the joy. It is a great feeling knowing you have brought joy to someone else. The second answer is that I just love the written word, whether it be reading or writing. So being able to spread my creative wings and pour out my thoughts/imaginings is also a great joy.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans of course mean everything!!!! Without their support I would be just another writer hoping to one day share my creativity with others.
What are you working on next?
Right now I am working on the sequel to Dark Secrets. With plans to finish the first story I published on Smashwords.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life inspires me to get out of bed each day. You can't experience new learning experiences or be surrounded by family and friends if you hide under the covers all the time.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing I am usually thinking of other ideas for new stories. Some times the brain just doesn't know when to shut off.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I believe the first 'story' I ever wrote was a short little romance story when I was about 15 years old. I had been inspired by one of my favorite romance authors at the time and decided to try my hand at writing my own story. Very imaginative, but not very realistic.
What is your writing process?
I don't have a set process for writing. Some times I start at the beginning of a story and write consecutively through to the end. Other times I will have an idea for a chapter and write then, then could have an idea for a chapter that would be in a completely different part of the book. It is all a matter of the creativity you have at the time, the ideas that you are thinking of.
