Interview with Marie Harper

What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a continuation of the All It Takes Is...series. The story picks up with Kylie's and Ryan's story. Kylie Thomas was part of the her cousin Ally's story - All It Takes Is...One Night and All It Takes Is...Forgiveness. Kylie's feisty nature propels her into a dangerous situation and Ryan is faced with the danger of losing the love of his life. There are several twists that take my favorite party planner into the underbelly of the Russian mob, I am so excited to share this adventure with you all.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I always wanted to be an author, but traditional publishing intimidated me. I had no idea where to begin and the thought of pending rejection kept me from sharing the ideas I had in my head. Once I found out about Smashwords, a whole new world of possibilities opened up. Now, the characters and plots that swirled around my crowded mind are able to live in an ebook outside of my mind.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love, love, love being able to share my ideas with others. I have dreamed about being an author all of my life. It is such an awesome thing to say that I have published a book as well as to be able to share my imagination with others. Sometimes, it is embarrassing when my friends share a play-by-play of a steamy scene between my characters, but it is still worth it. Sharing my passions with others is such a rush! I love being an author.
What are you working on next?
I am still working on Kylie's story, All It Takes Is...Trust (Book 4), and I also decided to dip my toes into the paranormal genre with a love story based in Center City, Philadelphia between a school teacher and an Irish vampire. I am excited to get them both finished and share them with you all.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh my goodness...my favorite authors...I have many. I love Harper Lee - my name sake - as well as J.K. Rowling and Edgar Allen Poe. I have many different interests and enjoy reading all types of stories. J.K. Rowling inspired me to pursue my dreams. Her life story motivated me to take pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and share my ideas. Harper Lee showed me when I was a teen to the power of words. Her tale of a young girl during the Jim Crow era in Birmingham, Alabama moved me. The injustice, the hope, and the redemption surrounding the small community enveloped me and drew me in making love the craft of writing for more than just spinning a yarn. Lee created a time machine with her prose, and I can only hope to do the same. Edgar Allen Poe scared and delighted me with his twisted ideas and macabre sense of morality.

If it wasn't for these three artists, I would never have been inspired or empowered to pursue my dreams.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My boys, my husband, my characters...they compel me to wake up, to live, to just be. I am a very lucky woman.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing or thinking about writing, I am baking or spending time with my children, my husband, or my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I like to try new authors all the time in the hopes that others would take a chance on my titles. I look for website generated lists of titles I might like. I look for books on sale. I also select books that have been highly recommended or have awesome covers. It really just depends on the mood I am in.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was in 8th grade and I wrote a children's book about a sheep's 1st day of school. i still have it and now my boys read it. I guess it was then I got the bug.
What is your writing process?
I am a pant-ser. I just sit down and begin typing. At times, I stop and make an outline, but I usually just let the inspiration take me and my characters along for the ride. I do however love, love, love researching and found myself doing lots of it for my next two novels. I've looked up the history of the Russian Bratva, the significance of their jailhouse tats, Irish Potato Famine, and common terminology from both languages. I am having so much fun adding these extra touches. I truly hope they deepen the experience my readers will encounter.
How do you approach cover design?
I have found a great website that lets me do the work of a graphic designer myself. I find it hard to let go of any aspect of the creative process, but the website I found makes it really easy and affordable. Please email me if you'd like the address.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Five fave books are...
1) To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
2) One Heart, Two Souls by E. Kelly
3) Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
4) Game for Love by Bella Andre
5) The No! David Series by David Shannon
