Interview with Christina OW

Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’ve given a number of bios with the same boring stuff, so this time I’ll share something different and a little more personal.

Well, I finally finished my BA (yay!) I’m the last of my mom’s three girls and I’m also a twin (she is an author too). It’s a lot of fun playing tricks on people with my twin sister. We did so a lot when we were younger but not so much now. We were raised by my mother and we owe her so much and try to make her proud every single day.

I love to eat, mostly cake- red velvet and chocolate cakes (yum!) and burgers (wow!). You know the saying ‘a moment with your lips a life time with your hips’ thanks to my mother’s great genes I don’t have to worry much about gaining too much weight.

I would rather curl up on the couch with a book than go out which also means I’m not into the night life. My pyjamas are my best friend because they are so comfortable and only dress up when I go out if there is a good chance I’ll meet a hot guy!
How long have you been writing?
I started in 2010 so 7 years and I'm still learning new things about being an author.
What genre do you write?
I will say I'm Interracial and Multicultural romance writer. So far I've written contemporary, paranormal and fantasy books.
What was your life like before becoming an author?
Ha ha! Always watching movies and series. I’ve always loved to read but once I began writing, reading novels became my major source of entertainment. Now I can go a week without turning on the TV. Also it helps calm and steady me. Writing became my outlet in university.
Where did you come up with the idea for your first published book?
There are so many lives that are changed because one man believes he has a right to lift his hand against a woman. And for those women who believe they deserve it, or are too scared to leave because they fear a worse torment from their abusers, more lives are affected. Children in such situations may grow up to be abusers themselves, or a woman will wait too long and end up dead.

What these women need to believe is that their lives and their children’s lives come first and as much as they may find it hard to believe, the day everything takes a turn for the better will come and gentlemen who deserve them because they see how valuable they are will also come. All they have to do is take that step in making the decision that they are worth diamonds and gold and do what they have to, to get out of that abusive relationship.
It was published as Star Bright in 2011 by 5 Prince Publishing. Today, it's republished as A Chance At True Love by Inkspell Publishing.
How does an idea build on itself till you have the complete story?
First I think about the story. I play out the beginning and if it makes sense I try to figure out the middle part, the core stories and how many characters I’d need to tell it. Once that makes sense I move to the climax, playing out different situations with different characters until I get to the one that either makes me really comfortable or really uncomfortable but still works. Then I think about the ending. I hate writing sad endings but I also don’t want to write fairy tale endings, unless the story was a nightmare for the characters.
Then I spend days playing it over and over again in my head from start to finish. If I end up really loving the story I write it down in a summary. I don’t always stick to it because the characters end up taking a life of their own but it acts like a guide. I put a writing playlist together and I’d try to get songs that are close to the context of the story I want to write. After a few weeks of further contemplation I start writing.
What aspect of writing do you find the most difficult?
Writing sad scenes. I hate killing characters, but for the book, Love Forever After (Love Reaffirmed), to have some deep emotions and for the other character to grow, it had t be done.
For Star Bright (A Chance At True Love) it was writing Maria’s abuse. But I wanted the readers to say her happily ever after was long over due. That they were happy for her and her new life and the new strong person she’d become.
But for Fatal Jealousy it was more difficult because the scene was between the sisters, and been a twin like Ellsa and Ellie it felt like the greatest betrayal.
What do you envy about the characters in your book(s)?
True love.
What do you like to read?
Romance, paranormal, thrillers, suspense, inspirational. A book that has an inspiring love story that can happen in real life or something close to being realistic.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephanie Rowe
Delaney Diamond
M.O.Kenyan
Danielle Steel
Cynthia Eden
What advice, resources, or useful information can you offer aspiring authors who might be reading this interview?
When it comes to getting reviews, try- as difficult as it may be- it take constructive criticism with an open mind and use it to make your other work better. You will encounter haters, that’s a given. With such people, don’t play into their spiteful nature. The only reason they write nonconstructive nasty things about your work is to discourage and annoy you. Shake it off and keep doing what you love.
Work doesn’t stop with writing the last word to your novel. Writing the book was the hard part- there is nothing easy about writing- but the testing part is marketing it and getting it to as many readers as possible.
It’s worth the struggle when you invite others to your imagination and they love living there as much as you do.
