Interview with R. Gayle Hawkins

Published 2016-05-07.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. Though it did hold controversy, as the main character could not take rejection and killed himself. My teacher, Miss Geiger, did not feel it was suitable for an elementary school book and asked I change it a little.
What is your writing process?
I generally begin the writing process by writing an outline of each chapter. I can stay on track better by following the outline. As I write, I may delete a chapter from the outline or combine it with another. The outline simply reminds me of how I want the story to go.
Who are your favorite authors?
Johanna Lindsey, Edgar Allen Poe, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and many more.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My next work, The Strive for Life and Love, follows Nicholas Blackstone as he lives in France. His brother is dead, sister is married and he is rich and alone in a country he is not familiar with living in. It introduces many challenges and new people. The book is also much longer and better edited than With Loyalty Came Love. I plan to release it later this year.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The beauty and adventure in the day. I love looking at nature around us and admiring the beauty of it all. The delicate details of a leaf on a tree or actions of a squirrel fascinate me. As human beings, we often take for granted the images around us.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I am not writing, I can be pretty boring. I do not live a rich life of entitlement. I clean my residence, cook some dinners, wash clothes and pay bills. My husband assists me in most of it. Every now and then, we do splurge on entertainment or travel. Due to MS, I am often too fatigued for a lot of physical activity, but I still like to push myself.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on northern Ohio in a small town located next to a town with a world renowned amusement park. The small town in which I lived is quiet and friendly. Most of us knew one another even if we were not friends. The town next to us was a great contrast. To shop for clothes or find entertainment, we generally traveled there. The tourism brings a large amount of different people and introduces you to many different cultures. I believe my writing takes the understanding of people from the contrast of the two towns. While you may feel safe with those around you, there is always something close by that may disrupt thought, emotion, logic and many other aspects of life.
When did you first start writing?
I first wrote as a child, but as for a career in writing, I did not start until 2014.
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a novel called Treasures In The Past. Like my other novels, it displays a connection to characters in previous novels. The time period is actually prior to the other two novels, but it explains Paul Ripley's act of murder and you find out more about Dagger. My plan is to have all my books connected in some way by people. I do not consider any of them a series since you do not need to read the others to understand one copy. It simply connects people through time and places, which is how the world works for us.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Boredom and lack of connections. Lol I have many friends in many different fields, but writing and publishing is new to me. And, the location that I live does not offer a vast amount of publishers to talk with about your work.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
As a child, my favorite story was The Gingerbread Man. Fast as fast can be, you can't catch me. I loved that book.

Through the years, I have read many novels. Yet, I still hold a fondness for The Gingerbread Man.
What do you read for pleasure?
My reading entails many different types of literature. I enjoy classic, mystery, paranormal, romance and many others.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have only used my cell phone as an ereader and enjoy it. I would probably enjoy a tablet as well, but only at home.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
The best marketing for me has been through social media and press releases. My Twitter account has brought me the most sales.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is art. I approach the design to entice my readers while still presenting mystery.
Describe your desk
I do not own a desk. One may be in my future, but right now I simply use my laptop.
