Interview with CN Pinckard

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I mostly read young adult fantasy. They give me ideas and inspiration what to do with my own stories. Plus I like cleaner books. So how do I find the e-books, I look for the books that are similar to my own.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was a script to a movie I had recently watched. My brother saw it and was reading it. He then put me to work on writing modules for D&D. The impact was that my brother, then, believed in me, and my passion for writing fantasy had started then too.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a few friends that bounce ideas off off, and a super wonderful model in Maria Amanda. Her image is perfect for Meranda. Her skin tone and all. My cover artist and I work from there.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is one of creating, and imaging. I think of ideas of what I want my heroin, Meranda, to get into. Then I work out what I want her and others around her to do. From there I build a story line and plot line. A lot of times, the story writes itself.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Hobbit, The Ranger's Apprentice (1-10), and the lord of the rings series. Why? Well because they are fantasy, clean and have a way of bringing forth the imagination. Plus they are inspiring to read.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Louisiana, named Hall Summit. Everyone knew everyone. It influenced my writing, because I lived in the woods, on 10 acres of land. Back then there were no computers, just imagination and creativity. Because of the woods, lack of technology, my creativity and ideas for books flourished.
When did you first start writing?
At the age of 19, people told me I couldn't do it though, I had a small school education. Basic English, sentence structure and vocabulary. I struggled in High School with the subject, and it was my least favorite. When I came into college, I learned that it wasn't that beast that drooled over my shoulder ridiculing me. Instead it was something that opened up new doors for me.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Arising From Darkness is about a girl, Meranda, who has been enslaved by a wicked man named Gavid. She simply is out to find the king and report all that is going on. Gavid then finds her as she approaches the king and believes he has killed her. Instead, the king saves her and a stranger also has found her through her own abilities as a Riftrider. While, Gavid flees and is on his way to take over the plans to take over the entire continent.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have been with a few vanity press publishers and realize that I have the capability of doing it myself. Most don't really understand how easy it is. Just have to learn the quirks of Smashwords, and other sites, and know how to get it all done.
What are you working on next?
Currently, I am working on book 3 of my Riftrider's Return series. It will be a 10 book series.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I have two boys with autism and a husband who is a five (yes five) time cancer survivor. They are my heart and soul. They show me that you can't give up no matter what happens.
