Interview with Steven McFadden

Published 2017-12-23.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Time with my wife, gardening, walking, drumming, house repair,
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Other human beings inspire me -- the chance to know, interact, and get close to other people.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most often through the recommendations of friends and colleagues.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes - it was about a pilgrimage I made to a shrine in Framingham, MA. I was required to write a 500-word essay for a Boy Scout Merit Badge, and at the time I thought 500 words was akin to a great mountain that I was required to climb. Now, after so many years of writing professionally, a 500-word essay on any topic feels akin to a Haiku poem.
What is your writing process
Step by step. Revise and revise.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Silent Snow, Secret Snow. Enchanting.
Describe your desk
Small, plain, busy. Nice big bay window beckons over the top of my computer monitor.
When did you first start writing?
In junior college.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well, it took about 40 years of life and learning to get to the point where I could write this about Tales of the Whirling Rainbow:

Tales of the Whirling Rainbow is a journalist’s account of some of the key myths and mysteries of the Americas, and an electrifying exploration of how those myths are resounding in real time. Veteran journalist Steven McFadden weaves the living myths together in a tightly written book that is eye-opening, and soul resonant.

Drawn from sources both ancient and modern, Tales of the Whirling Rainbow conveys adroit insights into key facets of North America’s unfolding saga. Learning to respect these knowings is fundamental to our spiritual growth and progress on the land going forward in time.

As the Sun awakens and earth changes intensify, our human lives attain high velocity. At this time and in this manner, elders across Turtle Island (North America) told me over the years, the human beings who are the different colors and faiths of the world will be moved. This will create opportunities to heal their web of relationships.
What are you working on next?
Another book about our land, our farmers, our food, our destiny. Agroecology. I'm also at work on a biography of the late Leon Secatero, former Headman for the To'hajiilee Chapter of the Navajo Nation.
