Interview with Tonia Viles

Published 2014-08-13.
What is your writing process?
From what I have read of other writers my process is a bit different. I don't start with an outline. I sit down to my computer with a ember of an idea. I let it smolder and grow until it catches a flame. Then I chase the fire until it ends. After the full story is written I go back and develop the people that now live in it and dig deeper into the book as a whole.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was in one of my eighth grade classes. It was called The Missing Night. I hope to one day go back and develop the story more.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Oh yes. One of my seventh grade teachers loved book reports and I hated reading. She had the whole class read "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. I found out that not only can a book take you place, but it can also bring people into your life that inspire you for the rest of your life. The characters in this book are still with me today and I think they will continue to be for the rest of my life. Ponyboy and John's story lead me to start writing.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
"The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, it was the book that brought me the love of reading and later writing.
"The Stand" by Stephen King, the story and characters were beyond anything I had ever read.
"The Talisman" by Stephen King, watching him develop a world that no one had ever seen but him was defiantly inspiring. This is the book that showed me that Grandel Isle was possible.
J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, I love the depth she went to make the magical world so real and possible.
Dean Koontz's Fear Nothing series, just plain fell in love with Christopher Snow.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Grandel Isle is the battlefield for Earth. The men and women of Grandel die everyday to keep Earth alive and unaware of the devastating creatures that exist in our universe and in other dimensions.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Family and friends, they all feel that I should share the people and the world I have created. Without them I'm not sure I could've taken the step to become one. Also I wanted to show my daughter that no dream is unreachable as long as you try.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love visiting the places my imagination takes me.
What are you working on next?
Its the second book in the trilogy, Grandel Isle: The Sacred Relics. This time Brandon, Steven, and William must defeat a new creation of the Darkness'. This one is more powerful and dangerous than any before.
Who are your favorite authors?
Stephen King
S.E. Hinton
Dean Kootnz
J.K. Rowling
Steven Alten
Peter Benchley
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
That is easy, my daughter.
