Interview with Andrew Kirby

Published 2014-05-26.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I always had a desire to write, even before I was in kindergarten. Online books seemed way to cool, so here I am!
What do your fans mean to you?
I'm a fan junky, I love knowing my books make someone happy or receive some sort of emotion from my writings!
Please, write me your suggestions as well, I love getting mail!
What are you working on next?
Masala Roleplaying game. It is based off the Masala Collection series. I have a lot of character sheets to make, after that, it will be up to go! I was motivated to make it from the my brothers who love roleplaying games that are fantasy or sci-fi based. I decided to make a fantasy based world with magical sci-fi.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I work as an editor. When I'm not writing or at my job, I like playing games and watching movies with family and friends.
I'm not much of a video game player, but I enjoy watching great players wizz through a game. I also spend some time at secluded beaches, libraries, cafes, etc.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first book I wrote was in kindergarten about a little puppy.
What is your writing process?
Usually I first come up with an idea, and start writing notes. Then I get an outline of what I want to say or to sort out the stories in the story. Usually when I write, it is in spurts. For example, I might be inspired and write 30,000-50,000 words in one or two weeks. Then I go slump for awhile, only to spring into action a month later. Some of my scientific works took me years of back and forth writing and research, with three-six month breaks inbetween.
How do you approach cover design?
I don't, I'm alright artist, but I have to admit I'd rather have someone else do it for me. I'm still trying to figure out how to make epub and pdf files and even excel I don't completely understand all its mechanisms.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. The Bible. It has been an inspiration for the greatest good and the greatest evil in mankind's history.
2. Lord of The Rings. It seems most fantasy stories are based off it these days.
3. American Constitution. It marked a revolution in how governments were done.
4. Rights of Man. Helped mold our modern times.
5. The Klingon Hamlet. Because reading it will really make you "stupider"!
What do you read for pleasure?
I like non-fiction cultural books and travel books.
Describe your desk
It has no lower shelves, but upper. On a usual day you'll see a Taiwanese flowered metal change holder on the top, with a Bible and other religious materials. On the desk itself, you'll find an atlas, random scriplings, a laptop, a desk lamp, and possible some colored pencils and markers. A box of tissues and my recent reading materials are also found there.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up all over, but mostly in Indiana, Alaska, Ohio, and Michigan. Indiana gave me a sense of relatives and family. It gave me a feel for farmlands. Alaska gave me my primitive and influenced my writings of nature. Ohio gave me a feel for camps and cities, violence and 'kin' friendships. Michigan made me wake up to how even though I have light skin, I'm actually far less European than I am of other continents.
