Interview with Zachariah Louis

Published 2015-10-13.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a couple of new stories in the Bloody Colony series. These I will be published in a special BC book, which will be free.
What's the story behind your latest book?
There is quite the buzz in the science world, with missions such as Mars One seeking to colonise Mars. I wanted to write about how the ingenuity of the human race will allow us to colonise space but we have to take humanity, with all it's failings, with us.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The prospect of killing off a Bloody Colony character in the most horrific way possible!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
In addition to my writing, I am also a musician. I have an album in the works, which I hope to release early in 2016.
Describe your desk
Busy. Most of the space is taken up with monitors, speakers and other pieces of kit. I have a pleasant view out into the garden.
How do you approach cover design?
I found an excellent illustrator called Max and bought the rights to use the image. I added the text myself.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had worked in a large multinational company for seventeen years and wanted to do something completely different.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Until plexipads are invented, I use an iPad.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is hopefully pleasing readers with a great read.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I moved around a lot when I was young. This meant that I was fortunate to meet a lot different people, which really helps in creating characters.
What is your writing process?
My process is pretty straightforward. I decide what subject/notion/idea I want the story to be about. I generally build the plot outline and setting very quickly but spend more time building the characters. Once I have all of that, I write from the first line straight through to the last line. Then I will edit, edit some more, then edit again until I am happy that the story is ready to publish.
