Interview with Aaron Lerma

Published 2015-08-19.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The rights. I don't have to give up my hard work for another company to take and call their own. Indie publishing has given me a lot more control and I really enjoy it. I can choose the designs, the format and the people I trust to edit my work!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me in writing is escaping to the world I've created. I can get away from life's struggles and enjoy myself; get lost in a magical place.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes! Strangely enough. I was in elementary school and it was a very short story I wrote for class. We had to use all of our vocabulary words for that week and write a story with them. I wrote about a princess who had a powerful ring that was hidden from her and she used it to restore balance to the world. I wish I still had it.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm accustomed to a lot of graphic design programs, so I used my favorite: Gimp2. I studied a lot of other works from indie authors and what formats they used. I looked into their fonts and found several public domain photographs which I combined to get the effect I want for my covers and even book fonts.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a combination of things, usually fiction. I'm a big fantasy-fiction, sci-fi type of person. If it has some action and adventure I'm willing to give it a try. I also love some romance novels occasionally, including Nora Roberts. Oh, yes.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't particularly have a preferred choice, but I do enjoy my Kindle that I have. I got it for free, so it wasn't really a choice I made.
Describe your desk
Messy! There are some soda cans, a few styrofoam cups from convenience store fountain sodas, and my eye glasses. But my computer is where it's all at!
