Interview with Adrienna D Turner

Published 2013-08-29.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My father was in the Navy; therefore, I've lived in Buffalo, NY and Great Lakes IL (Naval Base) as a young girl. This had a major influence to my writing for Young Adults, since my debut novel was written in my hometown: North Chicago, IL. I had to do some research since things have changed since I last lived there to make it current. I also plan to continue the Mirror Saga Series from places I've lived and resided in for a number of years, and reflect on the youth I've mentored, tutored, or worked with in a group home/foster care setting. See copies under my pen name: Dream Summore. Re-release date in Summer 2014 under Divine Garden Press.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest project I'm currently working on under pen name: Dream Summore, is showcasing the story of young adults that have been in and out of group homes, juvenile detention, and released from their homes because of destructive behaviors. Keep your eyes open and ready for the Mirror Sagas for Young Adults.

My poetry books have some songs when I was an underground rap artists in Illinois and others are prose about real life situations and experiences shared in "From the Depths of my Soul" and "Half the Battle is to Surrender all I Have".

My nonfiction books share bits of my testimonies in "Desire at Will" and "God is in the Equation" which are readily available on Smashwords and where books are sold. As one reviewer clearly says, "This book has truly been life altering for me. It moved me from a somewhat committed Christian to a one who is completely surrendered to God. Adrienna Turner has an amazing way of sharing God's truth in a way that makes you feel like she is talking to you as a caring friend. Her transparency in refreshing and much appreciated. I highly recommend this book."
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the positive feedback and how it has changed someone's life after reading my work. How it has strengthened their beliefs and faith in Jesus. How it has encouraged them to be deeper and closer relationship with God. These are the joys of my writing, that it has been perceived as it was intended for the reader. It has touched, evoked emotion, or motivated them to continue to live and dream forevermore.
What do your fans mean to you?
My readers are not "fans" to me, but those who contact me become like a dear friend to me. I appreciate their honesty and transparency. Overall, they mean the world to me and my writings!
What are you working on next?
There are a few projects that I am working on, but mainly on "the Miss the Mark Series" which is an apocalyptic thriller of seven series. I have children book I hope to work on based on my three cats that are dear to me which has a positive message and connection to God. Later, will work on a supernatural series about angelic beings and humans. I have a couple nonfiction projects to write in the future too.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have so many to name. However, I will list some that I have read in the past when a young adult until now:
Francine Rivers
Alice Walker
V.C. Andrews
Bill Winston
Joyce Meyer
Vanessa Davis Griggs
Sharon Ewell Foster
Zora Hurston
Richard Wright
Tyora Moody
A'ndrea Wilson
Judge Gregg Mathis
Tyler Perry
Pamela Samuels Young
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
What inspires me to get out of the bed every day is that it is a new day to dream...to watch your dreams become a reality...and to fulfill my destiny.

I taught teleclass a year ago and attended a conference to speak on the Dream Experience Series, to get people inspired and dreaming again. People have lost sight of their dreams, forgotten their dreams, and fell asleep on them because of discouragement, disappointment, or felt worthless. Therefore, I encourage others to believe that all things are possible through God who makes the impossible possible.

We have to step out of the boat, and trust we will make it ashore. Moreover, we are to never give up on you and the dreams that rest inside of you. I keep pushing every day with God in my equation.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Currently, I am either reading and reviewing other books or studying and prepping for LSAT until October 5th. I also love doing radio spotlights on virtual programming of which I host two shows: Dream4More Radio once a month to share HOT reads and author interviews and other radio program is virtual ministry program called DYRP Midnight Hour.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
There are authors who contact me for book reviews, or the groups I am involved in on LibraryThing and Goodreads, I find out about these great eBook reads and write reviews in return.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I still have the first stories I ever wrote in junior high school and during first two years of high school with a dear friend. She would read them, try to edit them and give suggestions or feedback, and then I would rewrite them in notebooks in different color ink. I hope someday to use these stories and short stories for future YA reads under pen name, Dream Summore.
What is your writing process?
Writing process changes based on the project. Nonfiction books typically require research and jotting notes first, and then add the chapter titles and title of book (if not already). Then, I would review the notes taken and organize them according to chapter or section. Poetry books are easier since they just flow what's inside of me, like writing a journal or diary where pieces of me come out on the page. Fiction books may require some research, insight, interviews, and past work experience to include in the stories I'm working on. I prefer to write late at night, do better after midnight until morning. When the story comes to me, I will either record on memo on phone or jot notes on scrap paper and write when I have the opportune chance too. I rarely do an outline.
