Interview with A.L. Bridges

Published 2017-08-26.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Kent, Washington (about 45min south of Seattle). Growing up in Washington influenced my writing by attributing to my sunny disposition, because something has to be sunny when you go so long without seeing the sun that you start to forget what it looks like. Then when it finally comes out, you want to just look at it and burn its image into your memory until it actually burns your retinas until all you can see it a giant black dot everywhere you look.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read blender operation manuals, the nutrition labels on little-known protein bars, and Cosmo for pleasure.
Describe your desk
It's warm, rather soft, and usually covered in denim, or cotton at the very least...except for that one weird week.
My lap.
I'm talking about my lap.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle and the Kindle app for iPhone. Sorry B&N; blame my grandmother, not me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was sixteen, I wrote the first twenty pages of a book on my phone while waiting for my classes to start. It was a humorous mystery about a serial killer that stabbed their victims in the ass before ejaculating on their clothing. There was also something about Death having a squirrel assistant that hated cats... I can't really remember where I was going with that.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ability to create and control in comparison to my actually life that I have little to no control over because of certain health issues.
What do your fans mean to you?
This is an interesting question. My fans mean a lot to me. The first time I got fan mail, I was filled with a degree of happiness and excitement that I hadn't felt in years. I ended up spending three hours writing a five-sentence reply to that email because I wanted it to be perfect.
The fans that like my books enough to post reviews also mean a great deal to me. Perhaps it's just a matter of having a third-party justify what I'm doing with my time, but I'm always happy when reading reviews from people saying that they like my work.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I had a dream where I was riding on top of a flying version of the Trans-Siberian Express while a blue dragon flew alongside it. I deviated from that original plan, but I did throw in the train part by the end of the series... and the dragon too, now that I think about it.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on catching a squirrel with my bare hands and trying to get banned from a country without serving jail time. As far as writing projects, I have a couple things I'm working on that I keep updated on my website.
