Interview with John Butziger

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a story about fitness clubs and dragons. I think I was in 3rd grade. I should dig it up and publish it.
What is your writing process?
Story boarding. I text myself ideas on long drives. Then I outline and fill in with writing later. Then edit, edit, edit, more editing...
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read The Hobbit - loved it. Then LOTR - I kept confusing Sauron and Saruman, so I put it down until I was older. I think I was 7 or 8 at the time.
How do you approach cover design?
99Designs! Best thing for covers EVA!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Wool, Galapagos, Wizard of Earthsea, Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Unchangeable Spots of Leopards. Just 'cause.
Describe your desk
A disastrous mess, but there is a method to my disorganization!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Rhode Island. It's an absolute gem with incredible natural beauty surrounded by ocean (well, at least with a lot of coastline). I think the raw beauty and power of the ocean is reflected in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing novels in 2014, although I've been writing since I was little.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The third in The Order Series, and the final in the trilogy. The story explodes onto the global scene and the characters from books I and II are driven to the brink as the world descends into chaos and war.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The ideas - I love riffing on ideas and then weaving them together.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything - there's nothing better than sharing your story with someone who enjoys it!
