Interview with Clay Matthew

Published 2014-12-23.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up as a military brat, so I had the opportunity to live in many places, which included three years in Germany. Then I served in the Air Force for five years and had the opportunity to live in Germany for another three years. Living in so many different locations allowed me to experience many different cultures which opened my eyes to a much broader world. The effect on me was and has been enlightening.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing poetry almost fifty years ago, initially just for fun. Later, and I don't know exactly when, writing poems became more frequent. Then, perhaps over the last four or five years, writing became almost an obsession ( one that I must say I enjoy).
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is having the opportunity to share in the trials and tribulations in my life and how God has truly been The One to help me see my way clear. This, I believe, I must share with others, with the intention that maybe my story will be of help to others.
What are you working on next?
I would like to have a second book of poems with a possible title: From the Depths of My Soul.
Who are your favorite authors?
Joseph Conrad and Zane Grey are at the top of my list. Two different styles, but each a rewarding challenge.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I continue to be inspired by the beauty of each day and my amazement at God's wonderful creation.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The Smashwords Style Guide is an exhaustive work that gives you what you need in order to be successful. Follow it and you will be successful.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle ereader.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I believe that what I write will help others.
Describe your desk
Officially, I do not have a desk. I usually write at the kitchen table, perhaps because it is a warm and friendly place.
Why is writing poetry your style of writing?
The answer is very easy. I have the innate ability to think in rhymes, so writing poetry seems my logical choice.
