Interview with Ambrose Avery III

What are your five favorite books, and why?
I have read so many books, that this is difficult to answer. The all-time, self-help classic, Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill was the first personal-development book that I ever read. This was about 40 years ago, and it still stands as one of the best, most read, self-help books of all time. It was very influential to my early development. The Holy-Bible, the Tao, and the Gita are fascinating reads, to say the least.
As a teenager, I loved Jack London's, Call of the Wild. It was about a domesticated, pampered dog, who was stolen and forced to become a wild, sled-dog during the Klondike Gold-Rush in the late 1800's. London made you see, hear, and feel like a dog! I also enjoyed the Hardy Boys Mysteries as a youngster.
As an adult, I've enjoyed a half a dozen of Dr. Wayne Dyer's books, such as Your Sacred Self, Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life, Excuses Begone, and The Shift. I love almost all of the New-Thought Authors books of the late 1800's, and early 1900's, such as William Walker Atkinson, and Judge Thomas Troward. Thought-Vibrations by Atkinson, is a metaphysical masterpiece, and the Dore and Edinburgh Lectures by Troward were very influential. One of the most influential books that I ever read though, was Cosmic-Consciousness, by Dr. Richard M. Buck.
What do you read for pleasure?
Anything dealing with esoteric knowledge, wisdom, and higher-consciousness. These are the books that concentrate on "right-brain" activities.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm old-school, I still have a laptop!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Philadelphia, but I grew up in the south, in Augusta, GA. and Beaufort, S.C. Growing up, I actually never aspired to be an author; one thing led to another and here I am. It just kinda happened.
When did you first start writing?
I've been writing all of my life, but about ten years ago, I started writing more prolifically for some web businesses that I was trying to get off the ground.
What's the story behind your latest book?
As a life-coach, I've actually been working on many concepts for many books since I had my brush with the "mystical-experience" about five years ago. This included a large collection of poems that I had already written for my websites and blogs. Once I became aware of Smashwords and their incredible platform, and since I already had a slew of poetry, it was just a matter of compiling, and formatting them correctly. And the rest as they say is history. I now plan on starting an esoteric library of books
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always been a "do-it-yourselfer!"
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm brand new to Smashwords, but their platform, and ease of use, is nothing short of phenomenal. I foresee a long and happy relationship.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to express myself, and to be able to share life-changing, esoteric information that isn't available in the mainstream.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The reason is inherent in the question...my Spirit is what "inspires" me! The fact that I took a breath should be enough inspiration! Knowing that I'm alive! Knowing that I am going to learn something new, and that what I do may have a positive bearing on other people's lives. Knowing that I am a spiritual being with unlimited consciousness, possibilities and potentials. The understanding that no matter what happened yesterday, this is a new day, and with each new day it brings the possibility of new awakenings.
About four years ago, I started performing a ritual every morning. I made it a conscious effort to smile when I woke up. No matter how I felt, no matter what happened the day before, and no matter what I had to do that day, I smiled. Why? Because like I said, I took a breath, if nothing else! Then, I perform a few yoga stretches, (asanas,) and meditate for a few minutes, or more. The whole ritual usually takes less than a half an hour.
I believe we should all start some type of daily routine such as this, because it starts the day on a positive note. The miraculous thing about human-consciousness is that, once you do this for about 21 days, it becomes a habit, it becomes second- nature.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love reading; especially positive, esoteric, (secret, obscure) consciousness building, information and wisdom. I enjoy listening to progressive, improvisational, jazz/funk, and playing the bass guitar. I also enjoy socializing with friends, bike-riding, playing basketball, and swimming. I dabble in watercolors, and although I haven't done it in a while, I enjoy fishing and shrimping.
Who are your favorite authors?
Jack London, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer, William Walker Atkinson, Judge Thomas Troward, Swami Rama, Henry David Thoreau, Emerson, James Allen, Swami J, Robert Collier, Joe Vitale, Gary Halbert, Thomas J. Hudson, Wallace Wattles, Claude Bristol, Henry Hamblin, Prentice Mulford, F.W. Sears, Edward E. Beals, Swami Vivekananda,
What are you working on next?
An esoteric library of books.
