Interview with Eva Utley

Published 2014-02-17.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I once spoke to someone who was in the publishing industry. He told me the first thing a publisher is going to ask you is if you've already been published. The only "published" things I have are fanfics that I would rather not show to a potential publisher. The man I spoke to suggested I try self publishing an ebook and see where that got me. So, here I am.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
All of it, really. I love having characters that I can speak through. I love coming up with plot twists or making everything connect in the end. I love thinking of cliff hangers to put at the end of a chapter or the end of a book. I want to be able to give people the feelings I experience whenever I read a really good book.
What are you working on next?
I have an ongoing project that I want to publish through a publishing house. It's a trilogy that connects with the book I've already published.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was a poor excuse for what people would now call a "fanfic" but at the time I didn't know what that was. I tried to write a story that took place after The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe but with an alternate ending where the Queen had won and locked up the four children as prisoners. I created a character that traveled to Narnia and was supposed to save the children and the land. I was only in sixth grade and that story has long since been buried deep, deep down, never to surface again.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Keyboard (3G)
What do your fans mean to you?
I don't think I really have a fan base yet. But, if I do have fans out there, they obviously mean a great deal to me. Without them, my stories would simply stay as plot bunnies in the far corners of my mind. I write to share stories with others. If there's no one to share the story with, what's the point?
