Interview with Angela Hormberg

What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read mysteries! Maybe it's the analytical accountant in me but I love to try and guess whodunnit. My favorite mystery writer is Agatha Christie. Write now I'm reading "The Complete Sherlock Holmes" by Arthur Conan Doyle. In the version I picked up from the library, it has all the original drawings. The short stories are intriguing and fun to read.

When I'm not reading mysteries, you can usually find me with a autobiography or biography or memoir. I totally believe that truth is stranger than fiction, and I love reading about people and personal adventures.
Describe your desk
I love my desk! It's an old Ethan Allen desk my husband used as a child. It fits nicely in a corner and has a four shelf book case. On top of it I have an inspiration board with book ideas, inspiring quotes and lots of pictures. It also has a credenza where I keep some of my favorite books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle app on my iPhone.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
My book marketing strategies are pretty simple. I'm a home school mom, and I plan on passing the word around to my friends. Teaching kids about finance isn't always easy, but I think the examples I provide make the task simpler. I've also created my own web page and plan on posting articles and tips there. Since my book is "how to", I expect sales to grow slowly over time.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My sister. We have participated in NaNoWriMo together and always talk about books we want to write. She is honest and always encouraging. I love her because she really believes that nothing is impossible. She's an Iron Woman, mom, wife, writer, carpenter, chef, and on and on. She can do anything she puts her mind to, and she encourages me to be the same way. When I mentioned my book idea to her she was immediately on board.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords made it all seem doable. The process to create a book and get it on the website has been so easy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband. He is a hard worker, and he leads by example. He is always doing the most he can to provide for our family, and to make sure that everyone is getting what they need. He is such a servant leader, and inspires me every day.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was horrible! I was in fifth grade, and I wrote this ridiculous love story. The neat part of the project was creating the entire book: writing it, making the cover, and sewing it together. After everyone in the class wrote a book, we had to share them with the class. I was so embarrassed! I had no idea we were going to share them.
What is your writing process?
With this book I created an outline and proceeded to write each section. A how-to book is a lot simpler than writing something like a novel, because you know what your end result is going to be from the very beginning. Since my book was about a subject I know really well, the words just flowed onto the page.
