Interview with Charlotte Gerber

Published 2013-11-07.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I published I Dream of Zombies in October of 2013. It is a story about Rose Lee, a zombie counselor who lives in post-apocalypse Hornellsville. I wrote this book because I thought it would be fun to imagine what it would be like to live among zombies, instead of running from them. In my story, zombies are the poor, unfortunate creatures who couldn't eat brains because their teeth are falling out. In addition, black pepper can kill them. Obviously, they shouldn't work in a restaurant or go anywhere food is served.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I tried the traditional route, but got bored with the amount of time it took for people to respond to queries. I felt I could do a better job getting my work out there instead of waiting on someone to yea or nay my work. I've always been a self-starter and business entrepreneur, so indie publishing really appealed to me.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is creating characters for my stories. It is fun to imagine what a person's vulnerabilities are, what they are going to say, and what makes them tick.

What do your fans mean to you?
I'm still in the early stages of my career, but I like hearing from my fans, either in reviews or in comments they've added to various websites. Even if they really don't like something, it means they took the time to read the book. If they like it, and take the time to let me know, it means a lot to me as a person, and as a writer.
What are you working on next?
I have several projects that I'm working on. The first is A Very Merry Middleton, which is a novella about Shannon and Victoria after the book, Murder in Middleton. Obviously, there isn't murder involved in this book. Secondly, I'm finishing a mystery, Curiosity Killed the Cat, which is about a woman who is now a sheriff in a small town. She is haunted by the memory of her murdered college roommate. I hope to have it out in February of 2014. Finally, I have the sequel to I Dream of Zombies, which is titled Zombie Asylum. Rose Lee will be back again fighting for the rights of her zombie clients.
Who are your favorite authors?
It is so hard to answer a question like this! Some of my favorites include Robert Parker, Janet Evanovich, Kerry Greenwood, Gerry Bartlett, and Charlaine Harris.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not writing, I'm sleeping. Okay, not really all of the time, but since I often burn the candle at both ends, I grab a nap whenever I can. When I'm not writing and sleeping, I enjoy traveling, gardening and spending as much time as possible with my family. I'm also an avid movie fan and enjoy watching mysteries, including oldies like Quincy, Magnum P.I., and Murder She Wrote, as well as Rosemary and Thyme, and the Phrynie Fisher Mysteries.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I don't have a lot of time to read books right now, but when I do read them I usually hear about them from my friends.
What is your writing process?
I usually start out with a short story, and if my family and friends like it, it has a chance of being made into a book. I write several ways - one is through NaNoWriMo where I just plow through a novel in 30 days. I also write outlines and follow them. It just depends on how much energy and time I have for a project.
