Interview with GJ Walker-Smith

What is your writing process?
I think I'm a little bit scattered when it comes to writing. I don't plan anything. Whenever an idea comes to mind, I jot it down. Most of my work is penned by hand in a notebook. Some of it ends up written on sticky notes, shopping receipts or the back of envelopes. Watching it all come to life when I type it all up is the fun part.
When did you first start writing?
I've always liked to write but confidence was an issue for me. Saving Wishes was hidden away on my computer for four years before I worked up the courage to let anyone read it. Now that it's out there, I'm kicking myself that I wasted so much time worrying about it!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Peter Pan was the first novel I remember reading. It's a story that I've carried with me and I still love the style in which it's written. My copy is an ancient, tattered book that was gifted to my mum on her ninth birthday. I still treasure it and actually made a few references to it in my Wishes series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm very impatient. Once I finally made the decision to put my work out there for the world to see, I wanted it done straight away. Now that it's published, I love the fact that I have total control over how it's managed.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I struggle with the notion of having fans. I just have a lot of friends who happen to like reading my books!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I don't think I'd survive without my iPad. My favourite time to read is in the car while I'm waiting to pick my son up from school. I actually get there early so I can spend fifteen minutes reading.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The team at Smashwords are phenomenal. I'm a writer, not a marketer. Having my books distributed to so many different retailers in one easy step was a godsend. The process was simple and the journey has been amazing.
What are you working on next?
I never intended writing a series. I expected Saving Wishes to be a stand alone novel but I just couldn't condense the story of Charli and Adam into one novel. Now that their story is done, I'm moving on to other characters from the series. Alex's story will be book four of The Wishes Series. Ryan's will be book five.
Describe your desk
Most of the time it's fairly tidy but some days real life takes it over. On a bad day, it doubles as a filing cabinet, an ironing board, a craft table or a dumping ground for plastic army men and lego.
