Interview with Harry Harris

Published 2015-02-10.
From your Bio we learned that your parents immigrated to the United States from Greece, but that you were born here in the United States. Did you have any trouble becoming assimilated to this country?”
Yes, a great deal; it wasn’t easy.
Greek immigrants, being ethnocentric, settled in Greek communities when they arrived here so I wasn’t exposed to anything ‘American’ until I was five years old. I only mingled with Greeks during that time.
Yes, a great deal; it wasn’t easy.
Yes, and I longed to mingle with American children but it didn’t work out as well as I had hoped: I was shunned by the children in those classes because their parents forbad them to speak to foreign ‘Grease-balls’ as we Greeks were referred to in those days.
. Does the fact that you’re a First Generation American with a Greek mentality and whose first language was Greek influence your writings in any way?
Yes. Enormously. Especially in the Love stories I write. I also find that my Greek mentality usually creeps into how my detectives solve some of my Murder Mysteries.
Have you always been a writer?
: No. I was an actor for years. I was in more than 200 Theatrical Productions here in the U.S., mostly Summer Stock and Touring Companies. However, I managed to get my own TV show called, ‘Here’s Harris’ on WSBA/TV, an affiliated ABC station in Pennsylvania, which ran for several years. Then I got lucky and got a job as the villain in the first and only Cowboy movie ever produced in Sweden; it was called ‘Wild West Story.’ I then began working well throughout Europe and I got a ‘Best Foreign Actor’s Award’ in Italy, which gave my career as an actor a tremendous boost and I worked successfully in many of the European countries for more than twenty-five years. Unfortunately, I developed Neuropathy while working in Australia, in a popular TV show called ‘Number 96’, which ended my career as a thespian. When I returned to the U.S., I realized I couldn’t retire gracefully so, using a walker, I began working as a Standup Comedian, -- who doesn’t have to move once he’s on stage -- and that work served me well for a couple of years. Then, feeling I had enough experience in ‘life’, I began my writing career: I enjoy writing Murder Mysteries; Love stories; Theatrical Plays, and Short Stories…and I’m happy to add that I’m still writing 24/7 and enjoying every minute of it.
Do you use your Greek name, Harrisios Harrisiadis, as the creator of your stories?
No. I’ve cut my beautiful Greek in half and I now put pen to paper as, Harry Harris. Incidentally, a Greek name, at least to us Greeks, is not only beautiful but interesting as well for it’s not just used as an appellation to distinguish one person from another but it also designates something special about the person. For example: my first name, Harrisios, in Greek translates to ‘Happy’ and my surname, Harrisiadis, to ‘Freedom’. My father’s first name, Philipos, to ‘Friend of Horse,’ and my mother’s name, Sophia, to ‘Wisdom’. So, you can say that I was raised by a Horse Fancier and a remarkably wise woman. I just thought I’d mention that.
