Interview with Kenzie Janzen

Published 2014-10-02.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy being outdoors. I have a small flock of chickens I tend to year round. I also love watching the wildlife, like deer and turkey, wander into our yard from the woods. I enjoy gardening in the summer. When given the chance, I like to travel with my family.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a children's book about heaven. There are many children's books about heaven out there, but none like I'm writing. Often times adults gloss over difficult topics when they are explaining them to kids. Kids are smart. They can see through that. So, the book I'm writing gets to the heart of the matter. No fluff.
Describe your desk
One hot mess! It drives everyone in the house crazy.
When did you first start writing?
Kindergarten. No, really. I didn't get serious about writing until a few years ago. I had kept a journal during that time. When things got really crazy in my life, I thought, "I need to tell this story." I wanted to help someone with what I wrote. That was my goal.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Control. I wanted control of my book and everything about it. I can say I did the leg work. I hired my own editor. I created my own marketing scheme. I helped design the cover. I poured everything I had into it. And I am satisfied. No regrets.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To help others. It's that simple.
