Interview with Jeanette Battista

Published 2019-03-20.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to create diverse worlds that speak to me in some way. I am able to get the voices in my head out on paper and hopefully they mean something to the people reading them.
What are you working on next?
I have a number of projects planned, though my next YA is a retelling of The Phantom of the Opera with a much darker version of Christine, where she is--in fact--the Phantom. I also have a M/M contemporary romance retelling of Pride and Prejudice that is done and waiting for publication.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am a gaming nerd. I play and DM Dungeons & Dragons, I play video games. I take Muay Thai. I spend time with my daughter and watch a lot of volleyball games. I talk to my cats as if they were people.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was the biography of my cat, Frisky. I was seven. It was riveting.
What is your writing process?
It varies on the project. When I am writing with a partner, we usually have an outline to go by and alternate chapter by chapter unless there is a scene we are dying to write. When I am solo writing, I have a loose outline of the plot that I go by, but mostly scenes come to me in flashes--I write them down and then see where they fit in the narrative. There are a few times where I actually write scene by scene or chapter by chapter outlines but those are rarer.
What do you read for pleasure?
I will give anything a chance. I hate not finishing books, but sometimes I just can't get through one, but those are pretty rare. I love YA--obviously--and I've always read epic fantasy since I was a kid. But romances, sci-fi, horror, non-fiction are all on my e-reader.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle Fire. I moved from a first gen iPad a few years ago.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Miami and spent most of my childhood in South Florida. I set my first series there. I love writing about places I've been to--there's a flavor you get from living there that you can't get from a book. Sometimes, it doesn't work out that way, but when it does, it's awesome. I remember watching the sun rise with my dad on the beach on Saturday mornings, I remember the zoo (before it was redone), I remember going to the bakery with my mom, I remember the butcher shop outings once a month. Hopefully a realism informs my writing when I talk about places I love.
Describe your desk
My desk is full of office supplies, random catalogs, a few gift cards, and dust. I do not write at my desk. I write at the dining room table because it is closer to the snacks.
What is the first book that made you cry?
The first book I remember crying at was Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. I sobbed like a baby when I read that one. I think I was in third grade.
What is your writing Kryptonite?
Text Luthor.

Sorry. Terrible pun.

Writing Kryptonite--not finding the right song/s to get me into the proper headspace. The Moon Series had a specific song that influenced every book ( a few times, the entire pay-off scene/chapter came to me listening to a certain song).
