Interview with Jeffrey Weber

Published 2013-09-13.
What is your writing process?
I use Dragon naturally Speaking to ensure my ideas flow into the computer as fast as I can say them. Words flow easily when I'm writing and I want to make sure I don't lose them through the slow processing of typing.

For my greatest tweets series of books I downloaded over 40,000 tweets and then split them into categories. Then I found logical categories and generated 3 books and working on my 4th - Jeff's Greatest religious Tweets
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
First stories I read were the Hardy Boys Mystery series - I found I really liked to read. Then I wrote my first published magazine article for Railroad Model Craftsman magazine where I worked in high school. I covered a model railroad convention in Woburn, Mass and I still remember I saw my first UFOs on the drive up there. I was even the photographer and had a couple of my pictures published along with the article.
How do you approach cover design?
I know my limits and seek help from Elance. however, I did design the covers for my autobiography My Only Crime Was being Born, I wanted a certain sadness and I think I captured that well on the cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Anything Mark Twain has ever written. Certainly reading Roughing It which is excellent. I like humor and sarcasm so I also enjoyed Don Quixote and Candide by Voltaire. I also like Daniel Defoe and PK Wodehouse - Jeeves and Bertie are two of my favorite characters - So my five favorite are: Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Mysterious Stranger, Candide & Don Quixote
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure I like to read books on investing, humor and self-help books. I like reading Uncle John's Bathroom Readers because I love trivia. Also I love to read any book by The Onion - love their humor
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Iphone
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Actually none have been effective - I have put up over 20,000 links - no help; I have put up 1000s of ads on Internet - no help; I have mentioned my books in tweets to my 157,000 followers - no real help yet. Now I offer 3 of my books for free and have increased "sales?" a little.
Describe your desk
It's a mess - has upper shelf with computer monitor, has desk top full of papers and has lower slide thingee that has keyboard and mouse - my desk at day job looks about the same.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Ramsey, NJ in a "Leave it to Beaver" kind of neighborhood - never met any minorities, divorced people or stupid people till I got drafted into the Army - Real World is still quite a shock to me. My naïve nature land my Asperger's Syndrome led me to view the real world as quite scary and easy to make a mistake in that can cost you your life.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in high school (if you don't count the writing in grade school). Then I wrote a parody of Antigone in college I called Antiwent - thought it was good. Then I started writing my investing book in the late 1980's - I Guarantee You Will Buy Low Sell High and Make Money and have written an investing newsletter the last 20 years for my investing book.

Then decided I would feel better if I wrote the miserable and few good things hat happened in my life. mark twain's autobiography inspired me - I did mine the same way he did his - I dictated it and based it on events without worrying about a time line. My life lends itself to sarcasm so I give my writing plenty of sarcasm.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is the last in a quartet of my greatest tweets and will show the best religious tweets. I consider myself very religious though I ain't a Bible-Belt Christian - I question everything - one of my tweets was "Just how big was the apple Adam & Eve ate?" Seems like life on earth sucks far too much for too many people!!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
That's easy severe rejection notices from many legit agents and publishers - I don't think Hemmingway could get an offer today. Smashwords is a godsend for author like me - gives me a chance for the world to see my books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
All my success has come from Smashwords. Smashwords is extremely helpful and designed for poor authors who can't afford expensive marketing. Plus the books you offered were a big help and Shelley my editor is wonderful and has helped me so much. Smashwords is the best Interent indie publisher on the planet.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing frees my soul, it eliminates my depression and gives me a sense of pride when I see the results.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me - I wrote my investing book to help the ordinary investor be a better investor. I have never written for the money but to give people help and enjoyment.
What are you working on next?
I will soon revise an old political book I wrote a satire on to include just how ridiculous politics is today - then a wacky humor book.
Who are your favorite authors?
Mark Twain, P G Wodehouse, Cervantes, Voltaire, Marquis de Sade
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife yelling at me - I don't like getting up - on work days it's the alarm clock. If I was a full-time writer, I'd fly out of bed every morning!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working for the Air Force, reading, watching sports, taking my 2-mile walk.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Search on my iphone and look for good free books
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, in July 1965 when I was 17, I wrote and published my visist to the S Gauge model railroad convention in Woburn, Mass
