Interview with Karen Barkan

Published 2024-03-06.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm a natural dreamer. I was born in a boring place, that naturally fertilized my imagination. My imagination took me to magical places where everything I want is possible. I spent a lot of time day dreaming. Later in high school I wrote my first short story, and continued writing in college.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing is in the creation itself. Being able to create characters, plot, a whole world - this is magic!
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are an inspiration to me. They motivate me to continue writing.
What are you working on next?
I'm not sure yet. The sky is the limit.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Everything around me inspire me to get out of bed: My family. a sunny day. The blue sky. The green grass. The amazing view surrounding me. People. Places I want to visit. Another person I can make their life better. My friends. Another day that I learn something new. Another day that I make a good impact on someone's life. Another day that I smile and laugh.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I teach Yoga and Ayurveda.
Is the book describe your life experience?
The plot originally was about relatives, however I didn't have all the details, so I made up most of the plot. The locations are real, so it would be easier for me to describe in details. In general the triangle love story is something that was created by my imagination.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was in elementary school. I wrote a short story about a girl who came from USA to live in our town and was in my class (which was a real story too).
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a triangle love story that involves time traveling, and super powers. It's about love, passion, mystory, risks, super powers, and finding inner strength.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords helped me getting my creation out there, spread it to the right channels.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are: J K Rowling, Elena Ferrante, Jane Austen,
