Interview with Kelly Duke

Published 2015-12-23.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Grisham and Patricia Cornwell
What are you working on next?
I have several ideas for new mystery thrillers, but the one taking the best shape is called "Redemption" (working title). It's about a billionaire who loses everything, including his entire family, money, career, reputation and dignity. He discovers links from his corporate and family lives to his tragic situation. It promises to be explosive with twists and turns. Wish me luck.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm a hospital administrator with the responsibility of bettering the lives of 500 employees and countless patients. I get a thrill from the excitement of seeing my staff heal people... heal a community.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I have free time I enjoy the outdoors, fishing, boating, and those kinds of things. I try to go to the movies once or twice a weekend.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
EBooks are great! I can access them on any of my devices, but I do love the feel of physical novel in my hands. I can feel the work the author put into telling the story.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Medallion is my first finished novel...
What is your writing process?
I work out most of my story lines in two places, while I'm driving and as I lay in bed falling asleep. I spend at least 6 hours a week driving on a New Mexico highway and take long road trips to visit my kids and grandchildren. Unfortunately, my mind gets too deep into a story sometimes and I can't remember the last ten miles or so... Kind of like listening to books on disk without the disk.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I read that really impacted me was when I read Stephen King's first story (I believe it was his first). It was only one page, but it was about a man that awoke from an unconscious state and found himself in a bullet manufacturing plant. He had no idea about who he was or why he was there. He was chased and shot at by armed guards, but the workers in the plant continued working as if nothing was wrong. Eventually they capture him and the last thing he hears from one of the guards is something like, "These robots are getting more life like all the time..."
How do you approach cover design?
I have a very good friend in Jerry Knotts. He and his wife Lilly own a design and promotional company call "Artist Touch" in El Paso, TX. I owe them so much as they've been true partners in my life and career... If you need anything in this world, I highly recommend you call them at 915-877-7156 and tell them Kelly Duke said to call... I have to give them a plug.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
As I stated earlier, Grisham and Cornwell are my two favorite authors... I like most of their books because of the way they think through a crime story. Their cadence inspires my writing.
What do you read for pleasure?
