Interview with Kelly Newson

Published 2015-06-23.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Los Angeles, California. Was born in the Harbor in Harbor City, CA but I was raised in L.A. Being from Los Angeles has influenced my writing a bit because I take my experiences and what I have seen and incorporate in my poetry sometimes in my fiction. Sometimes siting at the train station or local coffee shop I get this rush of inspiration from the people I see around me or what ever may be going on or a news story I hear or heard about. In each of my poetry books I have written there is at least one poem that pays homage to my home state, my city.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I wrote my first short story in my freshman year of high school, it was called 'four knights in armor,' and to this day I have not published it because now when I read it, I just think it is cheesy. I originally wrote in my second period spanish class in my freshman year of high school. I remember sitting down after the bell rang and paying no mind to the teacher I just started writing this story. I had this idea and just started working on it, the teacher didn't exist at that moment, I was in my own world as I am whenever I write a new story or poem.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love to read thrillers and/or dramas. I love stories that keep me guessing all the way to the end.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
love my kindle and my iphone.
When did you first start writing?
I officially begin writing at age 8, this the age when I had my first poem published. I begin writing fiction my freshman year of high school but didn't begin to take writing seriously or look at as a career until I begin attending Rio Hondo College.
What is your writing process?
When writing rather it is a poem or story I must have music. Sometimes I create a playlist or I may listen to the latest album(s) I bought or whatever artist(s) I am feeling at the moment. A lot of times when I write Eminem and Jay-Z are definitely always on the playlist as I write. I love to write in a peace and quiet environment and that can be a coffeehouse, library or at home. Sometimes I have candles lit or sometimes in the dark with just the light of my computer.

I can never predict where inspiration will come from, it can come from a song I am listening too, a situation I am going through, or a family member. In my earlier poetry I wrote alot about my father and him not being there and now my poetry reflects more on my life, love and politics. My poetry is my outlet in allowing me to express myself to the world.

When I write fiction I usually first create a character, create a character sketch and as I continue that process a story begins to process and that is when I begin to outline.

So for me in my writing process I select a quiet location where I can write for hours and can enjoy a hot cup of chai tea or vitamin water as I write to a playlist I have created or album that I love at the moment.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When readers tell me personally that they really enjoyed something that I wrote. I love it when readers email me or hit me on twitter or text me telling me, "hey that poem or that story I loved or it hit home for me and I can relate."

That right there makes it all worth it and makes me enjoy writing more.
Who are your favorite authors?
Langston Hughes, Stephen King, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, Pablo Neruda, JK Rowling
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing I love to play videogames and I love music. So you can definitely catch me with my headphones in vibing to the music of my favorite artists. I also love videogames, sports and art. I love to hangout with friends at the espn zone, art museums or the beach.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
DO YOU by Russell Simmons, WHO ASKED YOU? Terry McMillan, Thr3e by Ted Dekker, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Series, The Langston Hughes Reader
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
well this one of the first and it was called 'Bunnicula,' it was about a bunny who turned into a vampire at night. I read the story as part of my six grade English class and I remember being fascinated with the story. I was intrigued by it.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book I AM KELZ VOLUME II is a collection of poetry and a second chapter to the I AM KELZ series which re-introduces Kelz my alter ego to the world. I AM KELZ VOLUME II lets the world know who I am as a person, poet, writer and journalist. It shows who Kelz is through poetry while showing growth and not being ashamed of who she is and been through. My poems are like mini memoirs of my life but of course with some exaggeration but like I tell readers if you read my poetry you will get a glimpse of me and my life and I AM KELZ VOLUME II is no different.
What are you working on next?
Working on a new chapbook which will be out in October as well as a flash fiction story "Street Kings."

Then in Fall 2014 I will be releasing my debut novel which is untitled but coming along amazingly and I am also putting the finishing touches on my debut poetry album and a collaboration project with a good friend of mine by the name of Tamika Denise who is a fellow writer and an amazing one at that.
